...with apologies to Mr Aday and Mr Steinman, of course.

After taking possession of my third Axis, and comparing the relative figuring in their necks, I noted that a cleaning of all three was in order. Utilizing the search feature, I found several threads advising on how exactly to do this. Buried in the middle of one of the threads, posted in 2004, Dodgeball reported on an incident involving his Floyd Rose jumping off the posts when he removed the last string prior to cleaning his Axis' fingerboard. Several other forumites commented on how this should never happen, and at least one other chipped in with a similar story. Well, I'll be damned if that didn't happen to two outta three of my Axii Floyds while doing the same thing this evening!

One would think that the downward pressure onto the face of the guitar would closely balance the forward pull of the springs, not allowing this to happen, but it did. And strangely enough, when I had changed the strings on one of the victims shortly after acquiring it a few months ago, I had taken them all off without incident.

Has anyone else had this happen lately? I ended up using the folded string container as a block to hold the unit in place whilst I restrung the beasts, but there must be a better way to do this....

Thankfully, most string changes won't necessitate the full-blown neck cleaning, so a repeat performance in not anticipated.

Well, I 'm surprised. It should have happened 3 out of 3 times if you do it like that. Either remove all the springs in the back after detuning the strings a bit so relieve pressure both ways or stuff apolishing cloth in the cavity to hold the pressure (more risky). This isn't rocket science. It is the string tension that holds the trem on the posts. When you release that pressure, the opposite pressure (the springs) is gonna yank that sucker off the posts. Basic Floyd stuff here.

Ah, well of course that does make sense, although counting that original string change that didn't pop the bridge I guess I'm batting .500. I will certainly know better next time a fingerboard cleaning is in order.

I will plead innocent ignorance here - these are my first Floyd equipped guitars, so even basic Floyd knowledge is not a given....

Don't sweat it - I used to stuff the cavity until I dinged my own with a slip!

Since then I always remove the whole apparatus to change all the strings at the same time (I like to steel wool the frets and oil the fingerboard at least a couple times a year).

Yeah, removing the trem for board cleaning is an easy way, and it's simple like Norrin said. Just pop out the springs in the back (under full string tension while holding the trem in the other had so it doesn't fall out) then turn the guitar over and slip the trem off. You can usually pop it back on after cleaning and the damned thing will be in tune!

Block the trem. It will never happen when you block the trem. I use thick cardboard but even an Ernie Ball polish cloth folded up will work. Hope this helps you out.

I don't own an Axis but I have had similar happen.
Usually with a recessed route the Floyd snaps back
into the route and just has to pop back in place.

I guess with the trem resting flat on the body it might just pop off.
Change one at at time or block the trem up somehow I guess is the only
solutions.

Another Floyd quirk!:p

Thanks to all for the advice - life with Floyd Rose equipped guitars is a learning experience for me, so the more I learn the better it will be (or at least it's supposed to work that way....isn't it????).

i used to do the same too, when i had a guitar with a floyd. cant say i'd ever buy a floyd guitar again, after hearing an axis with and without a floyd side by side, hardtail smoked it!!!!

I always leave 2 or 3 strings on to hold tension. You can clean the fingerboard 1/2 at a time. Take a few strings off, clean that portion, put new strings on and tighten them up a bit. Take a few more old strings off, etc.

I doubt it there'd be any problem with taking all the strings off for the time it takes to do what you need to. I do it, all the time. Always have.

As for the floyd, years ago I taped up a popsicle stick with duct tape, and it I stick it under the bridge when I take the strings off. It has always stayed on if I do that. On occasion I've used a pencil. Whatever works.

I used to be able to say that Brent.

For the longest time I took all the strings off without incident. Then one day BAM -- dinged up the top -- I almost cried.
