Wow. A nine banger. Dlloyd might be interested. He was inquiring about a 13 string bass guitar. A nine banger is probably a good transitional bass when switching from a 4/5 to a 13. ;)

From a point and on, these designs are quite stupid.........
As for the nine bangers, Fretted/fretlesses etc.... I'll quote once again what Jeff Berlin once said:
'Those who weren't musical on a 4 string bass, are less likely to be more musical on a 5'

C'mon guys! Where are you gonna play these things? And God, even a 6 string has more extended range than you will ever need! If you need to reach that high:
1) Become a guitarist instead. It will cost you less to buy a full scale guitar rig than one of those beasts(7-string and beyond)
2)It seems like you are probably THE solo bass player(even Wooten, etc don't play more than a 6) and you definitely need this extended range when performing in front of, let's say 3,000+ audience alone.

As for the "Robin Hood" Model (bow that is), It is COMPLETELY impractical. I wonder how the hell they came up with this design.........

I even question the need for 5ers. Listening to Jaco, Marcus miller and all the other monsters out there who do things on the 4 string that I can only dream of trying to get to, do I need to play more than that?

At some point you will get away from the main job of connecting the beat to the melody and just be another instrument in the mix, instead of the foundation. It not the number of note, it the type of notes.

My 2 cents

I think what it boils down to is basically to do no more and no less than what is actually needed. But hey, maybe that's just the way I look at music. Some of my favotite songs I could have played on bass 10 years ago. lol

So...if a fiver of a 100 stringer help you play just what you need, then more power to you. There really isn't a law that says you need to be a virtuoso before you are allowed to move away from 4 strings. That's just bass snobishness talking.

Man, I did check out their website, and some of the designs are really nice. And they do stone fretboards! Supposedly you get 30% more sustain. I dunno anything about that, but some of their designs ARE cool.
Man, even the Stingray style they stole there...if EB went and did one like that it would sell like hotcakes I imagine. See the wooden "pickguard" area? That's lovely!

the wood PG on the EB knock-off is interesting - otherwise they're a joke.

What's next??

I even question the need for 5ers.

Them's fightin' words around Camp Bovine, and I ain't no zillion-notes-a-second Solo Bassist Wanker/Poofter - I'm a caveman and can play root-five if I have to.

I just like having the low D. Because D, played on the A string, is kind of too wimpy.

When I play with the praise team, I stay on the low registers until a D chord comes along. That's when I hit that G19. I've found that has the best D tone ever.

And if I'm really into the song, I'll bust a false harmonic by fretting G19 and playing the harmonic relative to where it would be on an open string, fifth fret. Mwehehehe.

On my junker bass I drop, but that is the reason I want a 5er for my nice new bass. I was gonna go sterling, when I thought about the trouble I'll be giving my new bass by dropping and tuning back up all the time.
