So my guitar mule finally arrived with the Purple Silo Special that Wolfbone sold me.

It's a lovely thing, and at such a great price so thanks once again Wolfbone:D

I'm playing it back to back with my Axis and my Albert, and the overwhelming impression is that of the neck profile being different.

I can switch from Axis to Albert without noticing any real difference, and yet the Silo feels a lot wider and flatter, a lot less 'clubby' . I'm just curious to know how different they are objectively rather than subjectively.

Am I getting all precious over fractions of a millimetre or is there really a big difference ?

The irony is that I used to own a couple of Ibanez guitars and one of those (a Saber) had a neck that was only 17mm deep at the nut !

man how times change.

DrBob,

I don't think you're crazy... I prefer the wide, thin neck of my Petrucci. I always figured a Silo wouldn't be too far off. Then, at the Open House last year I got to play just about all of the EBMM models, and I was far more comfortable with an AL or Axis neck than a Silo. I can't describe it, but I just couldn't connect with that neck profile for some reason. Maybe if I'd had more time..

Just how clubby is the AL neck? - are we talking Jeff Beck proportions here? I always though the Silo was quite a clubby wee neck, the axis is chunkier (on the bass side) but these ALs must be like a maple tree in your hand lol

personally I love the Silo neck profile.round is sound in my book.

As I said Komp I can switch between the Axis and the Albert without noticing any real difference so in terms of 'clubbiness' it's there or thereabouts.

I don't think it's Jeff Beck big, although didn't they reign it in a bit on the version 2 of the Fe***r Jeff Beck and make the neck a bit thinner and a bit less extreme ?

I've only played a Jeff Beck Version 1, I loved the neck hated almost everything else about it.

I'm a big man and I've got fingers like bananas so tree trunk necks hold no fear for me :D

I think I've come to a bit of a moentous decision, i think I'm definitely an Axis/Albert man. It's a shame because that Wilkinson trem and the pups on that Silo Spec are fantastic but even though it's a great neck it's just not a sublime neck like the other 2 are.

So I think I might put it up on the swapshop swaps board and see if anyone wants to trade an Axis Sport/Supersport for it.........

Mind you having said that I've just spent half an hour plugged into a Rotovibe doing rubbish Hendrix/Trower impersonations and it is a BRILLIANT sounding and playing guitar so I might try living with it for a bit and see how things develop.

Hi Doc,

I noticed a significant difference between my SS and Axis Sport necks. The greatest difference being that the Axis was asymmetrical: fatter toward the thumb and tapered toward fingers. Part of me really liked that, as it made sense ergonomically to the shape of the human hand. Just one problem for me: unlike your big hands and banana fingers, my hands are fairly small. For me, playing the Axis Sport required extra effort. My Sils, on the other hand, with it’s ample yet not obtrusive round shape, fits just right.

Whatever works for you.

candid x...

how small are your hands?
I mean, what does it mean, when someone says theyre hand is small.
My thumb, from base till the tip of thefinger is only 5,5cm.
Is that small, or medium small.....???
