Does anyone have experience with these on a SR5? I'm considering switching the stock tuners to take a bit of weight of my back. Any thoughts??

I think someone here exchanged the tuners on his Sterling with lighter ones. But I don't know who it was

I was the one who posted the question about putting the lightweight tuners on my Classic 5 string. But I was told that the lightweight tuners would not retro fit any of the stingrays.

danny-79, thanks for the link to the other thread. this is exactly what i'm thinking of doing. has anyone done this with a SR5? the claim is that you can save about 1/2 lb over traditional tuners. it doesn't seem like much, but after a long rehearsal, it might make a noticeable difference.

has anyone tried this and does 1/2 lb really matter?

thanks

Hey Danny, I just replaced the original tuners on my 93 Sterling with a HipShot Ultralites set.

They helped to solve the neckdive problem I had with that bass.
It got perfectly balanced now. I just like the picture so I decide to put on my avatar.
I kept the original tuners just in case.

A 1/2 lb. would make a difference. Is it really that much?

hey, five7

according to the description for the tuners, the ultralites weigh about 1.8oz each, and schaller style (ie stock tuners) weigh about 3.5oz. on a 5 string, that's about 1/2 lb (3.5oz-1.8oz * 5 = 8.5oz, or 0.53125 lbs).

Be aware that those tuners do not have the cone shaped peg, so you'll need extra string on there to properly push the string down.

Not really. I've had several D-Tuners on my basses and never had a problem.

However, you can also get the "cone shaped pegs" from Hipshot if you ask them nicely. I've done that for my D-Tuners, actually only to match the look of the other tuners.

Oli, did you just ask nicely when ordering, or how does that work?

I already had bought some BT-1 (I think), and then asked whether they have tapered posts as replacement part because I knew tapered posts on Hipshot tuners are a standard feature on Lakland basses. The next time I ordered a BT-1 I placed a comment that I'd love to have it with a tapered post, and that's how it came.

Neck dive? Really? Never had that problem with my Sterling. Maybe you are too much in George Benson zone with your strap length?

i talked with hipshot today and they can do tapered posts for the same cost.

as far as nose dives, i don't have any issues - my SR5 balances perfectly for me. i'm just looking to take a bit of weight of my back. has anyone noticed a significant difference after switching to ultralites?

None of my basses nose-dives, but a half a pound weight savings would be sweet. Every ounce counts at 2 am.

My older-wiser side says that it ain't broke, though, so don't go fixin' it.

Do these things feel as silky-smooth as the stock tuners? Is the ratio the same?

Are we even supposed to be talking about this, given that the stock tuners are not an EBMM product?

Hey all

I strongly recommend the Hipshot Ultralite tuners.
My Sterling is now much more comfortable to play with, perfectly balanced.

Those old fashion tuners are indeed a bit heavy for the downsized headstock.
