Lately my guitar feels foriegn. Like my hands don't want anything to do with it. It seems to be gettig harder to reach the point where it feels like part of me. I can't tell you how good it feels when I pick up my guitar and just start playing and magic comes out. It feels equally bad now.

Sigh.

Take a break from it. I notice that I'll play for days on end, and somedays nothing comes out the way I want it too, and this is after a good week straight or so of solid playing...so I'll take a break...and when I start up again, I am amazed at how effortlessly I can play, and play what I want to...

try new strings and a set up. Also, not playing for a few days always seems to work

Try the cheap fixes first (time off, new strings/set-up).

If that doesn't do it, maybe it's time for a new guitar!

Try throwing on some tunes that you don't normally play, and jam along with them. I'm not talking about learning the songs, mind you. I'm just talking about trying to come up with melodies over top of music that you don't normally play.

Sometimes I like to spin up a little Andreas Vollenweider and 'sit in'. Getting away from guitar-centered music always challenges me in a good way.

When I went to Vegas a few weeks ago, I thought of taking my crappy travelling acoustic as I normally do when I go on holiday. In fact the prospect of 10 days without an axe was pretty daunting!

This time, I took the decision I wouldnt. Having done 2 or 3 gigs a week for the last few months, plus rehearsing maybe once a week, I was a bit guitar'd out. Plus I had the added attraction of a beautiful young American lady to spend my week with, and I wanted to give her the attention that I would normally give my guitars!!! ;)

I was woried about my finger tips getting soft, but as it happens, I returned mentally refreshed and ready to play again and my chops were better than ever!

So maybe a break is what you need? 10 days is the longest I have gone without playing in about 15 years, and it felt good! Couldnt be happier with my playing at the moment.

Dude, no need to be bumming, happens to everyone now and then. Did you take a vacation this year? Not having time off or if work bites will do the same type of thing.

I know how you feel mate. But i just got an axis SS and it has turbo charged my playing. Try playing a week of acoustic or bass in a different style and then wean yourself back to your axe.

Wow thanks.

I thought about buying a new guitar. I really don't think that will do it.

I thought about taking a break too but that just scares me.

I have not had a vacation in forever so maybe I'm just tired. Maybe a little bored.

Don't be afraid to take time off from your guitar. Aside from the mental break, your tendons need a break as well.

SRV was just instant groove. Just add guitar. Short pratice sessions really helps this. Try just 10 minuets and have something else planned for as soon as you put her down.

Oooh! I know. Spend to much time here on the forum. ;)

Find someone who wants to hear you talk about how you love to play guitar and tell them.

Learn a new piece of music that is different than any thing else you have ever played. Now is a great time to add a tool to your box.

What you believe is real.

Buying new stuff helps, but it's not a cure.

Don't be scared, everyone needs sometime away from something, damn no matter I type this is keeps reminding me of that dumb song.

AH, vacations are a much needed thing!!! You need to change your surrounds to make you appreciate what you have, both in your things and your playing. Try to make a long weekend away somewhere even if it can only be for 1 day. Change is good.

NoRms, got a good idea, do you just play pretty much alone? Find someone else to noodle around with. I hear this and the more I hear it the more it makes sense to me. It's like when I go golfing, let say I play a round of golf with my usual golf partner. Then next time he can't make it, so I end up hooking up with another friend who's handicap is like a 4, way better than mine. I will shoot one of the best rounds of my life and it will happen everytime, because it's change.

Good luck, Glenn |B)

Doh!

I'm a fool.

A couple weeks ago I let some nameless stupid girl tell me how dorky I looked with my guitar up around my neck.

So I opend up all of my straps and let the guitars hang around my, uh, belt buckle.

That's what was throwing me off. It was okay for the easy stuff but just bound me on the technical stuff.

Doh!
