I think that might be an aftermarket tone pot. EBMM does make the Axis with a tone pot (see ASS), but it's not in that position.

This is probably an Axis hardtail (made 1996-1998) that someone has added a tone pot to.

yep on my Axis (1996) there was a pre-drill hole in that place making it easy to add a tone pot and I think that's what this dude did :)

The "cool" thing about the Axis is that it looks great with or without the tone pot.

But I will say one thing, put it in the bridge position pickup, roll back the tone to @7, and that IS WHAT A NECK PICKUP COULD EVER ONLY HOPE OF SOUNDING LIKE!!!!

I'm not a big fan of neck pickups - as you probably guessed.
