Velvet finish?

hey,

I just aquired a natural finished '95 fretless SR4.
the neck pocket and the pickup route has a black ink stamp saying "VELVET".
the finish does have a satin look not unlike oiled finishes.

so what exactly does it mean?

It's a dull-rub matte finish that was only offered for a couple of years. I don't know when.
