I recently got the Bass position in the All County Jazz Band. The music was hard but i learned it. The director was a really cool tenor sax player from the capital of our state. The Songs we played were Jeru, Leo, and Groovin' Hard, In order from hardest to easiest. At the third and last practice, the day of the concert he stopped to look at my Bongo. He told me that he really loved the sound of it and it almost sounded like a fretless. But i play with a pick so it does a little. He also said that my tone with a pick is great too and its round and fat. The over all experience was really fun, there were 3 of my friends that were in there also. It really made me work to be a better musician. And it was a real spirit lifter to get such positive language about my Bongo when i bought it without even trying it or anything.

Odd, isn't it? I mean, the Bongo still generates controversy in certain circles, but until I started playing them, I almost NEVER had comments on my bass or my tone, good or bad.

Bongo! Rocks!

I tell you a funny story about the Bongo. When I bought mine it was delivered for me to a guitar shop that sells only guitars, it has a few 2nd hand basses but they do not stock new ones, and you can only buy basses there if you order them.

When I went to collect it, it was a typical Saturday afternoon and the shop was vibrantly busy with EVH and Yingwie wannabees, tapping away like typrewriters on ecstasy, their lips pouting etc... you get the pic.

When my bass came out of the case, nearly all these guitar kids, stopped their weedley-weedley stuff and got back to sucking their thumbs and gathered around staring at this strange bass, asking all kinds of questions, like

kid #1.: WHAT IS THAT?

me.: huh... its a bass

kid #2.: WHAT'S IT WORTH?

me.: huh 1500 quid or there about.

Emo kid with lots of ear piercing holes big enough to pass a small egg through them.: WHO MAKES THEM?

me.: huh... (pointing at...) headstock? / logo? (thinking... can you even hear me over those ridicolous ear piercings, let alone read this??

kid #1.: MAN I GOTTA GIT ME ONE

me.: but why, you are a.... talented (lying through my nose) guitar playa aintcha?

kid #1.: YEAH MAN WE ARE SIGNING A CONTRACT WE WILL HAVE LOTS OF MONEY TO BUY GEAR WITH... WE'RE GONNA NEED A PROPA BASS...

me.: sheeet look at the time, hu-hu, ya great, good luck, sorry chaps, I must be off, pleasure talking to you's. :D

Round and fat?
Indeed.
But can also be sharp...
or muffed...
or punchy...
or agressive...

I love that preamp so much :D
