Hi all. I have a M/M Sabre 2 (1978) and would like some information on a possible modification to the guitars output. I have a basic understanding of electronics from burnt fingers, burnt carpet, and flashing lights from my eyes (from the initial electric shock), to my wife's somewhat lack of scientific understanding of progress through trial :p

The guitar has high output active humbucker pickups, from which i would effectively like to be able to select 2 modes. Mode(1) would be the normal -default- output level, and mode(2) would be half the output level of mode(1).

The default output of the pickups ranges from 0 to 5 (from a total 0 to 10). Above 5 increases the output exponentially. Using my Boss GT-3 processor i have a sound i like and use pretty much exclusively. From a guitar volume output of 10 the sound is high gain and long sustain. Reducing the guitar volume down to 5 brings less distortion to the sound. Further guitar volume reduction decreases the distortion level, until around guitar volume setting of 1 to 2 when the output is clean.

The modification i'm looking for is to retain the normal guitar volume output range 0 to 10 in mode(1), and 0 to 10 in mode(2) which equates to 0 to 5 guitar volume range of mode(1). Whether this can be done with a microswitch, a push/pull pot, or something else i don't know.

The ultimate aim is to have a greater guitar volume adjustment control in mode(2). As it is, i'm using the guitar volume settings around 1-3 for clean to the onset of distortion which can be a bit tricky. Therefore i would like guitar volume 0 to 10 in mode(2) to equate 0 to 5 from mode(1), thus giving me a greater latitude to fine-tune the output at the lower levels. Once set, my GT-3 guitar processor is rarely touched and i only use the guitar volume and tone controls to give me all the sound adjustment and colour i want.

I hope you can understand what i'm attempting to explain here, and yes i would be seeking a suitable 'man who does' to do the work :)

Regards

My first thought would be a simple resistor between the volume pot and the circuit board will do the trick. Measure the resistance of the volume pot in position 5. Use a resistor of that value (closest match). You will be switching that resistor in series with the line to (or from) the volume pot. Replacing the volume pot with a push-pull or push-push would be the ideal way to do it.
