Just picked up a nice guitar off of CL made of a Warmoth neck and body. I emailed Warmoth and they said the body is a VW, probably in white Korina, and that they discontinued it around 2008. Reading up apparently there may have been some legal action threatened from EB. Does anyone remember anything about this?

I don't believe the body shape is copyrighted (the MM headstock is). There's at least one other builder you can buy the bodies from.

Before I could afford an EBMM EVH, I built one using a Warmoth VW (VanWarmoth) body and neck. The body came without binding but had the channel routed for the binding. It also has a standard 4 bolt heel but was a pretty exact copy other than that. There was an independent luthier making copies at that time too, but he got a C&D from EBMM.

I could be wrong, but I believe EBMM asked Warmoth to stop selling the VW style body and so they did.

There were so many little details that I saw first on the EVH and tried to replicate on the copy. Stuff like the carved neck joint and the way the binding seamlessly melted into the body. I even went as far as recreating the 4+2 headstock and silkscreening my own logo onto it. I learned a LOT building that guitar and spent way too much time and energy building it. Wish I had photos of that guitar.

I spent years wondering how EBMM made the EVH/Axis binding look and feel that way. Years later, when I finally saw how they did it, I was floored!

Thanks for the info guys! One additional difference on this one is it has an arm contour, which I always wanted on my old Axis.

Oh yeah! I guess the non-bound version of the VW body could get that done. I don't recall it being an option on the bound body.
This is one of the reasons I love the 25th/Reflex so much. Very comfy compared to Axis.
