weak G string and tone problems

My musicman stingray 4 string has weak volume compared to the other strings and the tone is snappy and poppy. Turning the tone more bassy helps but I loose note definition and it's thumpy. I've played with the action and setup without much improvement. I'm playing through a Gallien Krueger 800RB head with Eden 4 ohm 210T cabinet. My old japaneese P bass sounds better. I play in a cover band. Straight forward classic rock and Rhythm & blues. I'm not into slapping and popping like some do. The bass looks good (sunburst with tortise shell pickgard, and the action is great...just sound bad.

Hi again,

On the G side...you have the PUP height ok? Average would be 3/32" from bottom of string to top of PUP magnet (while depressing G string at last fret to make the measurement).

Alwas like that, or just started?

You've done the obvious and put in a fresh battery? Some "new" batteries are not up to par.

I'll say this again ! this has nothing to do with the PUP height or New batteries this is something that has been going on for quite sometime with these basses and which IMO is "PISS POOR. I cannot believe that a manufacture of EB standards cannot, or willnot correct this flaw.

un-happy with your 4 string

I had the same problem. I own a SR5 and love it so I bought a 4 string hated it. Get a 4 string Bongo you will forget about this headache. peace

I've had a closer look at my 94 'Ray. With Mid range 3/4 (where I like it) every thing is ok. On flat or cut, there is a prob with the G.
