OK - here's one of the top 5 things you don't want to hear your kid say -
"It was scary but kinda cool hanging upside down from the seatbelt after the car rolled over"

My son and his friend (the driver) skidded on a rainsoaked road, ran up an embankment, and rolled over, totalling the car. They crawled out through broken windows, and so were cut up, but otherwise OK. The roof was partially caved in. It is phenomenal that they walked away from this, but it was all thanks to the seatbelts!

This was, btw, in the middle of the day - they were on their way to an AP exam. No gear in the car, except my son's friend's pedalboard in the trunk, loose. We're not sure how that made out, yet.

So, if you don't already - wear your seat belt! It sure made a huge difference today!

I'm so glad to hear good news from something like this Sharon, even with the belts "them boys is lucky".

I've always made everyone in a car with me buckle up. With my all kids friends I would always use the Steven Wright joke when I took them anywhere...

"You better put on your seatbelts I'm going to try something, I seen it in a cartoon but I think I can do it!"

Ah the joyful sound of clicks every time. :D

I see small children and babies all the time inside cars without seatbelts, or riding on parent's laps. Makes me want to scream.

I have a friend who won't wear one because he doesn't want the government "telling him what to do." Neither do I, but I'd rather live humbly for that cause than die nobly for it.

How often do we hear of someone being thrown from a vehicle in a crash? They are usually killed. Ask any EMT or police; most have never seen (or even heard of) a dead person inside a wrecked car with their seatbelt on.

Seat belts is always a good idea, even if the car is fully equipped with airbags. I've seen pictures and heard friends tell about bad accidents of open sports cars, where driver and passenger were able to walk away after the car rolled over several times but only because they wore seat belts... I'd rather not think how it could have ended otherwise.

Thanks, everyone. They're very happy to be around at this point. Icing on the cake, aside from a glass shard in Tim's left thumb, neither one even injured any playing fingers! They were very blessed to walk away from this one.

I was in a head on collision a few years back and am only alive today because I was wearing my seatbelt.

The other driver and myself were only going 23-30MPH as well and I was messed up for a couple of months. The force is incredible when you experience an accident that is more serious than a fender bender.

I wear a seatbelt even when i drive to the store around the corner (1/4 mile away).

A year ago to this day my buddy and I were on our way to dinner in his 2000 BMW 328i and we get in the left hand turn lane and all of a sudden out of no where and idiot in a large SUV forgets to yield and pulls in front of us. We were going only 20mph at the time and even though my buddy was driving and slammed on the brakes, we still T-boned the SUV. Even with seatbelts on, the impact was great enough to sling us forward. By buddy got a light concussion where I got the airbag cover in my lower jaw swelling up my lips so I looked like Mick Jager :p. Most likely because of my racing, I was super relaxed in the event of the accident and wasn't sore at all. My first reaction was yelling for the hotel clerk to get me some ice and a towel for my swollen lips. We walked away though and without seatbelts we would have been through the windshield even at 20mph. Seatbelts are there for the purpose of proven protection, use them!!! My car is never started until seatbelts are on.

My first job whem I left school was as a Wardsman in a burns ward in a teaching hospital and we used to get major road accident trauma cases everday.
The worst feeling would be getting that knock at the door at 1:00 am to say there has been an accident and one of your kids has been involved.
Seat belts and airbags are the difference between life and death even in fairly low speed crashes.
The crazy thing is that most people on this forum actually are on the road at that time coming back or going to gigs and unfortunately so are a lot of drunk drivers.
And an even more little known fact is that strong headrests are also a life saver as they will take a lot of the impact from the brunt of the gear in the back of your car continuing toward the back of your head in a head-on crash.

Yes, 23-30 is pretty fast when each are going that speed. You were smart.

Short trips around town make up the vast majority of our time in our cars, so we should especially wear them then.

+1 on the seatbelts. I rolled an SUV once (off-roading), and the only injury was some stitches in my little finger. The passenger and I were both wearing seatbelts.

Glad to hear that they were able to walk away with minor injuries.

I remember my Dad installing them in our station wagon, so I've been wearing them my whole life. Until four years ago they were just a habit, get in and buckle up. Coming home from church a lady crossed the center line and hit me in the driver's side door (I was driving). We were both traveling at least 40mph. Her car was totaled and my truck was written off as totaled.

They placed her on a body board and put her in an ambulance. The firefighters asked who was driving the truck. I told them "I was". They were amazed that I was able to get out of the truck. All I remember was calling my wife, telling her I was in a wreck and could she come and get me. I opened the door and stepped out to see how the lady was doing.

Adrenaline is a great thing I guess. The seat belt worked as advertised and aside from a little stiffness afterward I was okay. :)

Glad to hear they got out ok.

Here on our little green island we have to wear our seatbelts, its law and you will be stopped and fined with penalty on your licence if not. Best thing this government ever did.
Now if only they could completely clamp down on mobile (cell) phones being used by drivers....
