Let me preface, so I dont sound like a total moron. Ive been doing this lately, and it worked great live and on some studio tracks.

My StingRay weighs 11 pounds, is is a bit more mid heavy than other SR5s Ive played. Not a problem though. It had rounds on it for a day during the past couple weeks, but gave up on them, and on went my usual flats, of an unnamed brand.

So heres what Ive been doing. Through my iAmp 500/Berg HT210S rig, Ive been running my SR5 eq with the treble slightly cut, and the bass flat or slightly boosted. However, Ive been running the mids almost all cut, and at times all the way cut. My sound is great, and I feel that its my best yet. Doesnt get muddy, and still has plenty of punch.

Am I the only person who runs with the mids cut all the way?

Just curious.

Are you playing with the mids cut live in a band setting, or just at home when practicing?

If I'm playing fingerstyle, I find that I like the mids at least flat or slightly boosted in a band setting to hear myself the way I like to sound. The EQ settings are relative with the volume setting - meaning a large bass boost with slight mids boost at 80% volume might be the same as a lesser bass boost with mids flat or cut and 90% volume. But to me, mids cut all the way only sounds good when slapping or playing at home w/o the band.

Are you adding boosting the mids on the amp while cutting the mids on the bass or is the amp set flat?

Me too. My slap preference is 0 to little mids.
I also love the 0-mid/Travis tone for fingerstyle and pick
but it never works for me in a live band setting - I almost
always need a mid to boost mid setting playing with my band.

I wouldn't know about any of this. Just thought I'd chime in here to ask if Andrew came over with the GK and what's the verdict?

On my amp, that would be similar to setting the EQ flat, but then engaging a big dose of "Contour", which is pretty much a midrange scoop. That's not my defaut setting, but I go there fairly often.

Tom, weve had no Andrew visit yet, but I need to make that happen.

The no mid thing has actually been working in live settings. I dont slap, and usually HATE a scooped mid sound. The iAmps Hi and Low mids are set flat, and I think the Berg is just so punchy that Im still cutting through enough to be happy and hear what I want to hear. Also, the unnamed brand of flats that I use are known for being thick in the mids.

Oh well. Perhaps I am the only one that uses this type of setting. Sure sounds good where Im standing though.

Well *IF* you are doing that, you're prolly creating a notch and/or peak effect, sort of like putting shelving in the middle instead of the ends. This would happen if the frequency centers for the midrange controls are different between the ax and the amp, which is almost always the situation.

Travis, Travis, Travis...

Dunno, just wanted to say your name three times to see if you'd magically appear. Feeling quite coocoo for cocoa puffs right now.

Very excited about putting together a rig. Gonna have my DG Bongo5 HH up 4 sale here shortly. You'll know when, tee-hee. Should come right after the photos of a certain Pheonician applying DNA samples to a certain low frequency generator. Enough silliness. Get to playin' and stop questioning. If it sounds good, go with it.

You're not crazy...

If I want a more "old school" fingerstyle sound, I often will run w/ treble and mids fully cut, and bass boosted, switch in parallel mode. That's w/ rounds, and an Eden/Avatar rig w/ eq pretty flat. It works!

Another favorite of mine is mids flat, treble cut partially, bass boosted to 3 oclock, on the series setting. A great full-range fingerstyle tone.

Then there's Single-coil setting, boosted mids, funk!

Who said SR5s don't have tone flexibility?? The key is that all the tones they have are GOOD tones. !

You want a Single H anyway Travis.

Paul is a very smart man.

But I know you want a HH as well. Especially at the nice price I'll be posting.

I found that some of the presets I love on my fancy dancy amplifier have the mids set to zero. I'm not saying your not crazy, just that you are not the only person that does this. The fact that you and I both might do this is no argument for your sanity.

I never cut my mids, but right now i play with them flat. With just a slight bass and treble boost, which i guess is equivalent to a slight mid cut.

Scoop Fan!

Love the scoop - and the "happy-face" EQ - but usually only solo'd, in the privacy of my practice room. Found I needed the mids in a band situation.

In your case, it sounds like you found a workable solution - cool! :)

With slight variations, depending on the venue, here's how I set my amp:

settings0016od.jpg

The three toggles set the frequency at which the bass, mid and high knobs below them will be centered:

- For Bass, "Normal" sets the frequency at 100 Hz. "Sub" at 50 Hz.
- For Mid, "Normal" sets it at 800 Hz. "Shift" at 400 Hz.
- For High, "Normal" sets it at 3 Khz. "Define" at 5 KHz.

Cabs are a pair of Avatars, one 2x10 and one 1x12, both with a tweeter. My fretted Bongo has always both humbuckers full, full piezos plus bass, high mids and highs at maximum. Low mids are around 70%. Of course, with such "extreme" settings in my Bongo, I never have the volume knob at maximum. It normally stays at 50%.

The above are my settings for band situations. If I'm going to play solo stuff like "The Star-Spangled Banner" or "Linus And Lucy", for instance, my amp's settings keep the same, but the bass and hi-mid knobs of my Bongo are slightly rolled off (like 1/4). Also, I set the pickups' blend to 80% bridge-20% neck. Piezos are always welcome (I love them!). Same approach for my fretless Bongo.
