As some of you might remember I wound up with a Fender American Series Tele as a result of an amp purchase that didn't work out (store only offered credit with a return).

Well, after tripping over the virtually unplayed Tele (in it's case) for nearly 3 months I just swapped it out for a NOS Sub 1 guitar at the local EBMM dealer. It needs some serious cleaning (3 years of store dust, etc.) so don't ask for pictures yet; I'll get some up after its cleaned up. I think it is in the cinnamon finish; it appears kind of coppery-brown in most light, with the diamond-plate pickguard. It's the two-pickup model with a trem, and will be a nice backup/occasional humbucker excursion guitar for my Silo Special.

The somewhat bad news - the shop didn't have anything to go with the guitar. I'll have to make a call to Customer Service on Monday to get a trem bar, but what else should I have gotten with a Sub? The store did give me a generic gig bag, but should it have come with an EBMM gig bag? I know this is technically a CS question but I don't want to waste their time on something I shouldn't have received.

Also, any advice on how to work those Gotoh locking tuners (they are the top lock version, not the self-locking) would be helpful; it really needs a string change.

You did get something with your Sub; excessive amounts of mojo :D

Seriously, I have a feeling you will find yourself playing it a lot more than you think you will. Mine isn't ever going anywhere

As for the tuners, you will notice there's a notch at the top of each peg. You can either use a screw driver, or you can twist it off with your bare hands. From there, you just do things as you would with any other tuner.

Congrats man - you won't regret it. I was just jammin with my Sub earlier today, I STILL melt over the tone of that neck pickup. It's just sooo, soulful.

As for the tuners, I'm not really sure what you mean by 'not the self-locking'. None of the EBMM locking tuners are 'self locking' like the cam'ed Planet Waves tuners. With the Sub tuners, you just use a screwdriver to loosen the top. Then you pull out the old string, put in a new one, and tighten it back down. The locking tuners on the other EBMMs do the same thing, but from the bottom, and with a thumb screw rather than a screwdriver. The actually 'locking' of the string is manual in both cases.

As for what you should have gotten with it, I just got the trem arm, extra springs, cloth and ad card when I bought mine.

John, congrats on finding a new SUB1, they are few and far between!

The hardtail SUB guitars had regular tuners, the tremolo models had the locking ones. The locking tuners on the SUB would be tightened from the front of the tuner with a screwdriver or coin - whatever you may have handy. Tremolo models came with a tremolo bar and extra springs. There was no case or gig bag included with them.

Thanks for the tips; I figured these needed a screwdriver since they didn't have a knurled thumbwheel. These are probably the original strings from when it left SLO. They threw in a couple of packs of Slinkeys since I've got to get the trem arm, so I'm cleaning it up and changing strings tomorrow.

MikeVT - Gotoh also makes "self-locking" tuners where you just run the string through and turn the tuner button to lock the string with an internal cam type mechanism (they have essentially two posts). I've had guitars with that version of the Gotoh before (a Melancon), but not the EB type. All my other EBs have had the Schaller tuners.

TNT - it's a dusty SUB, not a Silo. They wouldn't budge on their dusty Silo :(

Ah...got it. I didn't realize others made the self locking type. Either way, I guess my point was that all the EBMMs I've seen were manually locking as opposed to self-locking...

Congrats again on the find,
Mike

Pete,

I guess we were cross-posting; I didn't see your post last night. When I call CS about the trem arm I'll ask about the extra springs as well.

I don't know what I'm going to do about a case for the SUB; I'll be in touch about pricing on an EBMM case but I might just go generic for this one.

Honestly, unless you are taking it on the airlines or on tour, a SUB is safe in a gig bag. Mine has recieved some rough treatment in rehersals and traveling (one of the initial reasons I got this guitar), but it's still in pristine, brand new condition. If you shot the thing, it'd flex a pec and laugh :p

True, but due to the layout of my house I need a case to fit it in where I store my guitars when I'm not playing them. Also I would worry less if this wasn't a $10 throw-away gig bag with no room to store the trem arm, a strap, or anything but the guitar.
