I have 2 Silhouettes with Floyd Rose bridges that I loooove. Until recently, I hadn't played any other EBMM guitars but these. I bought a regular Silo (used) a couple of months ago but something felt weird, it just didn't play like my FR silos. About that time, I went over to GC in Natick, MA, and tried out an ASS (also used), and also didn't love it.

Fast forward to yesterday: I went back to GC in Natick and found they have a new batch of EBMMs in stock, including a BFR ASS, two Lukes, a Silo and a JP.
I played the Axis (a beautiful rosewood neck model) and the neck felt great! I also played their Silo, and it played just like my Floyd equipped silos!!

The only difference I could find between the guitars that felt great to me, and the ones that didn't, was the string spacing at the nut. I measured the FR nut and the strings are spaced 1 3/8" - then I measured my 1998 silo and the strings are 1 7/16" - only 1/16" difference! The new guitars I tried at GC have a different nut that my 98 silo, they are compensated while mine is not, and the string spacing seemed narrower...

So my question is, is 1/16" that big a difference when it comes to string spacing? Or am I just imagining things?

Does anybody else find it weird that I spend so much time thinking about the nuts of my balls? ;)

Weird? (neighbor)

Well, uh....who am I to say. I've played all those guitars at Natick to figure out the contours on the sub I'm modding. Except the Axis that I didn't see until I was heading out and already late. Gotta check that one out.

If the strings are spaced out more because the nut gives you this, then sure, it's going to feel quite a bit different.

Hey,

I'm not sure if you measured correctly, etc. . . but to answer your question - yes, 1/16th is a big deal to most all players!!

Your hand can feel the difference way more than your eyes being able to notice the difference.

Sure, I took the 1 11/16" nut off my Petrucci and replaced it with a 1 5/8" one. Works great. I am more used to the slightly narrower spacing.
