The time is getting closer for my new ASS with piezo to arrive and I am a complete newb when it comes to using a piezo.

I don't play gigs so I am looking for an acoustic amp to use at home. I have seen some recommendations for acoustic amps that were way more than what I need in power and size. I am looking for recommendations on one that will give reasonably good tones without breaking the bank.

Thanks.

I'm going to be going to GC this weekend to scope some sub $200 ones out, I'll let you know what I think.

Thanks for the recommendations. I will have to try and find some them locally if possible so I can try them out first. All but the AER and EV look to be in the price range I had in mind.

I agree with Rob that the AER is probably the best sounding of the bunch, but they are big $$. I've played the Crate and it really doesn't sound bad for the bucks. People tend to shy away from them due to the name though. I'd love to be able to try out a Carvin but I've never seen a used one in a local store.

Your best bet is to play anything you are interested in.

I tried a Schertler acoustic amp which just blew my mind. Amazing. Haven't tried the AERs just yet.

Right now, I'm just running it through my MarkBass combo. Sounds freakin' great even though it's a bit unconventional.

I have a Fender Acoustasonic, can't say I'd love it, very brittle. I'm looking to upgrade it, so I appreciate this thread.

I appreciate all of the candid comments.

I checked some of the prices and the Carvin, Behringer, and Crate are in my size and budget ballpark. The AER and Schertler look to be great amps but are way more than I need or want to spend for my use, at least at the present time.

Yeah, that Schertler was expensive, and that's why I never bought one. I was very impressed, however. I'm also impressed by my MarkBass combo. I actually use it more for my piezo than for my bass.

I just got the Marshall AS50D (50 watt). Great for home use, and I use it on band gigs on stage DI'd to the pa. Chorus and reverb built in, great quality feel and look about . Not as cheap as some , but much cheaper than others. Highly recommend a look.

Thanks. I did already have that one on my list after surfing and checking reviews but you are the first to mention it so I will see if I can find one local to test.

DJ, most Guitar Centers stock the mentioned Fendr Acoustic Amps both the 50 and 100 watt models, the North Dallas GC had a used one in stock a couple of weeks ago.

+1 on the AS50. I had one for a while and enjoyed it in stereo with my Krank. However, on its own, it sounded a wee bit flat. I actually preferred my marshall Valvestate to the acoustic amp so I sold the AS50 and bought another Valvestate. They are a little more dynamic.

I just got back from GC where I played through a 99 dollar little green crate. I think it sounded fantastic, mind you i've never played through and acoustic amp before (so I know little about them and how a "good" one is supposed to sound), But I think this little 99$ special sounded 10 times better than when I was playing in peizo mode through my regular amps.

It didn't sound as "alive/vibrant" as through my regular tube guitar amps...but at the same time it wasn't trying to kill me with razor sharp transients when I really played hard or dug my pick attack into the string...so yeah, as far as I can tell it's defintaly voiced differently than a standard guitar amp. I enjoyed this one alot...

While we're talking about it, can someone who knows their way around the world of acoustic amps post a quick reply and let me know what the difference is between this $99 green crate and some of the 4 and 500 dollar rolands, etc?
(it was kind of nice to go shopping without any pretense...my not knowing anything about them I wasn't swayed by name brands or features, just how they sounded to my ear)

As far as I can tell it looks like that your paying extra for is a tweeter/crosserover in the cab and a multiban eq to dial out feedback (but thats not a problem for us now is it) :D
