I happen to be one of those people who believe that certian amps just work better with certian guitars. Les Paul and a JCM 800. PRS and a Dual Rectifier. Other guitar/amp combinations will work, but something magic happens when you mix the right elements.
As far as the Axis goes, I think the perfect amp is a 5150 Combo. Seeing as how the 5150 was designed to sound good around the EBMM/EVH, and the EVH and the Axis use the same pickups, how could you go wrong?
I always thought that the crunch channel sounded great, but I never did care for the lead channel. Until recently, I hadn't been able to find an amp that would come close to the 5150/EBMM Axis combination. I bought a Mesa Nomad 45. That little bastard can make some serious tone. When you put an EQ pedal in the effects loop and pull out some mids, it sounds very much like the 5150 combo, but warmer. And the lead tones are excellent. You don't switch channels to play a lead, you just hit the solo button on the footswitch. Best of all, it's a 1x12 combo, which is considerably easier to carry than a 5150 combo.
In general, I'm not a big fan of Mesa tone, but this little Nomad is an ass-kicker. So far, the most tonally versitile amp I've ever owned.
I tried out a Carr Rambler yesterday with my MM90. Wow great amp. I use mainly a Mesa Boogie Studio and a Mesa Boogie Subway Rocket in stereo and they sound great as well, but I am ready for something different. I think I am going back next week to get the Carr. If anyone is interested in either Boogie let me know. I have also just purchased a Blackstone Appliance Mosfet Overdrive, I recommend checking these out, great pedal.
The reason I asked is my Axis SS does not sound good through my Champ or other SF Fenders that I've tried - way to much mid range. I'll try pulling the mids out with a EQ.
Glad to hear that the Axis sounds good with Mesa's, especially Jon with the DC3 as I've just ordered a Lone Star Special head and 4x10 cab.
I use a rack setup that includes two preamps (a Marshall JMP-1 and a Rocktron Piranha), an effects unit (TC G-Major) and a Mesa 20/20 power amp run into a couple Mesa 1x12" cabs - small, loud, versatile, fun... I have a Fender Deluxe Reverb for when I'm feeling like all I need is a tiny little amp, too!
Being a 5150 owner, I'm biased, but I'd recommend a 5150 or 5150 Combo for an Axis. Especially when you consider that amp was worked out while EVH still played the EBMM guitar (Axis). They go together quite well.
I use my Axis as a drop D tuned guitar...it sounded ok with my Vetta, but it's a little weak with my new tube amp..I'm considering throwing some duncans in it...I know someone who's put the JB in their axis with great results...
no, you did read that correctly. with no overdrive channel I use an analogman modded TS-9 to drive an old rat 2 (probably from the late 80's) for distortion. BIG sound with the stock axis pickups
Let me know how that Lone Star Special is. I've been wanting to get my hands on one, but haven't had the chance yet. I've always had good luck wtih EB's and my Mesa Boogie MK IV, but reading up on the LSS makes me want one.
