Top 5:

SRV - Pride and Joy
Rush - YYZ
Dream Theater - Under a Glass Moon
Led Zeppelin - Moby Dick
David T. Chastain - Wild and Truly Diminished

Not a Riff, but still one of my favorites: SRV's version of Little Wing

I could go on for days - that's why I limited myself to a top 5.

Hmmmm, favorite guitar RIFFS, right? Not songs or solos, but just riffs. OK, here are some of my favorites:

#1, heads above all others: Funk 49 - Joe Walsh and the James Gang

Others I am particularly fond of:

The opening steel riff on the original Sleepwalk - Santos & Johnny

The end of verse break from Pappa's Got a Brand New Bag - James Brown

Waitin' for the Bus - ZZ Top

Back in Black main riff - AC/DC

Bad to the Bone - George Thoroughgood (but based on countless blues songs)

Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love intro - Van Halen

Heartbreaker intro - Led Zep

riff during the break after the drum solo of Whole Lotta Love - Led Zep

Cold Shot - SRV

the slide solo riff from Dixie Chicken - Little Feat

Daytripper - Beatles

main riff from Waitin' on a Friend - Rolling Stones

intro from Machine Gun - Hendrix

intro from Fly by Night - Rush

" " Bad Little Doggie - Gov't Mule

" " Victim of Love - Eagles

" " Fun, Fun, Fun - Beach Boys (heavily inspired by Chuck Berry)

" " Freak Out - Chic (Nile Rogers)

" " Cut the Cake - Average White Band

There you go. Good luck with the article, it's sure going to be hard to whittle down the most notable riffs, there are so many good ones.

definitely agree on the 3 Fs of riffer madness:

Funk 49Fun, Fun, Funand Freak Out

2 out 3 are still guilty pleasures and the one from Cleveland is just an outright sin:D

My favorite new/current riff is actually by one of our own. The first time I heard it I was in the deer in the headlights, mouth agape pose. It's definitely got a WOW factor.....

Taint Your World - Luke (Toto - Falling in Between)

Although most of the song generally annoys me as I have heard it a million friggin' times, the solo near the beginning of Layla and througout the song (Derek and the Dominos, not Unplugged) is still one of my favorite licks.
