First thing that popped into my head was that movie The Christmas Story, when the kid put on that bunny suit from his aunt. :D

Seriously, though, I think you made the right decision. It's difficult to receive presents that aren't a perfect fit, and then feel obligated to show said present off to others when you wouldn't normally. But in the end, it's one more instrument than you had previously, which is always a cool thing.

They went out of their way to do something that they thought would make you happy, and that is priceless. You're a lucky guy!

you can only do what feels right to you.Me i would never ask them could i sell it but thats just me.

I am keeping it. I am gonna play it and use it at my shows. I think the reason for the bass was they thought the shape "fit" my style of music and it looks cool. They are not musicians. They don't know EBMM from a maple tree...in other words...not musicians.

So, I will keep it and play it.

Hehehe, this really is an adorable story, though. Think about it. Koog's non-musician friends thinks Koogs needs a bass makeover... "He definitely needs something that looks more metal...." They really did mean well, I'm glad you're keeping it.

Just make sure you know where Poppa is at all times when you have a gig. At the party I can help you corner him so you can plant the GPS tracker... :D

when i first heard neckheavy i thought gibson all the way.. fun to know there are other basses that needs a firm left hand grip as well!

ps: good choice on keeping it as well... but dont let that keep ya from scratching your balls most of the time ;)

Yep, you made the right choice. If it is worth modding; then mod the crap out of it, that, they will never have to know about.

Late to the party here...

Not much to add, lot of good perspectives here. Seems like you've chosen the path.

My only thought was to talk with them (as some have suggested) about instrument preference, etc. Tell them about your relationship with EBMM, the board, and the owner, etc. Tell them what you'd like to do, then say - would you come with me, pick it out, choose the color, etc. Get them involved.

I guess if I gave a friend a gift related to their hobby/passion, of which I know nothing about, I would feel crappy if they just used it 'because'.

Then again, the "its just another piece of gear" comment works for me.

Its all good.

PS: If I recall, Jackson keeps a certain Fender Jazz around because it was a gift.

lie, lie, lie, lie, lie! say a miget stole it. tell them "that you don't bring it to gigs because you don't want it damage." your dog ate it. it spontaniously cumbusted into flames. then trade it for women and beers. :)

actually Koogs I dont think that you should gig with anything but your favorite That doesnt mean that you wont play it from time to time....a bass is a tool for an artist and I thik that the artist has to chose.

Yep. And maybe once a year, I get it out of the case and think, "You know, this isn't a bad bass at all" and then I make the terrible mistake of comparing it to one of my Bongos or a Stingray and back it goes into the case.

It's a gift. You keep it and you cherish it for what it means - not what it is.

I'm in the keep it and play it on a song or two camp.

I know I'd be somewhat insulted if I gave a Luke to a friend and he sold or traded it for a different guitar.

I had a strap button put on the bottom horn...not neck heavy now.

Tommy....I love you too man!

Keith....I am not sure about the "protection" mode yet...but I will find out...lol

Big Poppa.....I use my two bongos exclusively because one is tuned to E, the other to D.....however...my fellas wrote some tunes (2 to be exact) and I think I will use the 5'er for those until I get a 5 string EBMM. I agree...use the tools that I am comfortable with....so, I will give it a try and see....it is the only way to know for sure.

I am keeping it.
