Hi Guys,

The Silo I just got came with 9-42 Guage strings. I would like to change them to 10-46. Just to check, I held a 46 guage string in the low E's nut slot and it did not go in as easy as the 42 did, it kind of "grabbed" the string. Now this has the "compensated" nut. Do you think Ill be ok changing the strings? Will I have to widen the nut slots? And if I have to widen the nut slots will that effect the intonation?

Thanks,

N

Well if you are asking this you probably should not handle it yourself. But yes, you may need to widen the nut slots if there is binding. That in itself should not change intonation unless you cut the slot lower towards the fretboard. However, changing string gauge will affect the intonation. One thing you can try is wrap the larger string in some pretty fine sandpaper and run that back and forth to widen the slot. But if you mess with the nut, you might mess it up.

Thanks. I guess I should ask if anyone else had to do anything when they "uped" their string guages from 9s to 10s.

never had to do a thing...

+1

All of my balls have been changed from 9s to 10s.

Yep i have trems. Tiny bit of graphite/lube on the nut & BAM.. No problems..

Haha Yeah I have my BFR luke set to float a little bit...
I save the majority of my bar abuse for my floyds, but I can flutter and dive pretty hard on it... it is a great trem.

Lube the nut and whack them on... you'll have no dramas :)

jamminjim says

you could just use the new larger string as a tool, and run it back a forth a bit in the nut slot until it goes in and out without binding.
