So I have been playing the HELL out of my first NEW sunburst Silo. The sounds and versatility coming out of that thing are amazing. However the pickups are questionable. I think they sound a little bit too vintage for me. I dont want any crazy pickups that are for heavy metal. Something with higher output and versetile so that it WILL also be able to have that vintagy tone. I LOVE Steve Morse's sound the best, but also Satriani and Petrucci. I already have a the Air Norton and Steve's Special in the Iba**z, which does all the heavier Perucci stuff. So I was thinking, how does the PAF Pro in the neck and Breed in the bridge sound? I've never usde these pickups, but on the DiMarzio website it describes them as something that would go well together for the sound I am looking for. I just love moding my guitars so that they are perfectly for me and my special touch ;) I already ordered the black dome nobs to replace the plastic top hats, because I personally dont like the feel of them. I DO like that it has the numbers on it, but they are not comfortable for me. WEll anyway, what do you guys think about the pick up configuration I came up with??? Do you guys have any suggestions, comments, etc.??? The middle single coil I am probably gonna leave in there, because I have NO idea what I would put there to balance the humbuckers. If you guys have suggesions about that, that would be awesome!!! :D

Do you have the Silo or Silo Special???
The Special is usually the more vintage sounding one.

Hey, what's up buddy. I got all those pics you sent me. Very interesting, since all the sunbursts seem to be different. I LOVE mine to death, but it's also because they show up different in the pictures due to lighting and exposure and so on. MY Silo is the 24 fretter with h-s-h configuration. That's why I was asking which humbickers would go well, and wether the PAF Pro and Breed would be a good versetile combination for Progressive/Fusion style. I DO like these pickups tho. I will leave them in for now, untill I play the crap outta this thing. But initially the pickups sound vintage. That is also the discription stated on the DiMarzio website. But further down the road, I am probably gonna change them, cuz I got a specific ear for the sound I require. However I have not tried enough pickups to know which specific ones I want, that is why some suggestions and comments about what I picked would be nice.

What's going on here people? No one has any suggestions or comments about pick ups??? I mean I know that there is the Open House and all, which I WISH I was going to. Maybe my thread just SUCKS and is uninteresting to everybody, since 78 people read this and had nothing to say. Well, whatever. I guess I'm on my own in picking the right pickups for my new Silo. Looks like I gotta go to Harmony Central and see what those people had to say about EVERY pickup. I see this is going to be a long process. :(

Roubster, relax man. Lots of people have already taken off or are in the process, so this place is pretty dead.

Your thread doesn't suck, just it's gonna be a little bit vacant for a few days.

Did you try doing an Advanced Search and see if anyone has made any recommendation about those pickups.

Hang in there man, someone will help you. Glenn |B)

Yea, I'm just an impatient bastard at times. You should have seen me waiting for the Silo. This forum is the only thing that made it better. But none the less, I posted this a couple of days ago. But whatever.

Hey Robuster,

This discussion comes up from time to time and I think just about everyone has a favourite brand of pickups they like! Dunno why it's so quiet (ok yeah, it is the open house ...!)

My two cents: I like the silo pickups. I think they're well balanced and cover a lot of tonal ground. Of course, you hands and rig play a major part, so only you know if they're applicable, and it seems like you want to make a change.

I like Bill Lawrence pickups. IMHO the L-500 is the best rock pickup I've played, and I have 'em in a few guitars. Like EB, they're hand-made in the USA and only $50 a piece. Happy to give you more info if you need, just PM me.

Have you thought about the Dimarzio Steve Morse pickups? The Breed is a nice pickup, more of a PAF on steroids... check out Steve Vai's DVD... the Bad Horsie guitar is Breed-equipped.

I think you have made a good decision with the Breed and Paf Pro for the applications you describe. I would also think about the new Virtual Paf Hot, the Air Classic (very underrated pup) and Air Zone for the bridge. Also the Paf Pro works real well in the bridge as well as the neck if you like the Paul Gilbert type tone.
