Thanks for the redirect Phatty!

Position 1 being closest to the bridge then going forwards...

Position 1...
This is just like a single H SR5 in series position (closest to the neck).

Position 2...
This is the back coil of the humbucker soloed. This seems to give a more Jaco-esque tone but not as thin. Still has that MM growl. Great for funky finger stuff.

Position 3
This is all 3 coils (both in the humbucker and the single coil) going. Very full and round tone. Tends to be a bit more boomy but with the bass at the right spot, it's very focused. Especially in the low mids.

Position 4
This it the front coil of the humbucker and the single. Think of this sound as a jazz on steroids (but much better.) Think of Marcus Miller's slap tone with a bit more growl and not quite as bright.

Position 5
This gives a surprisingly round tone. I'd say is the most warm out of all the positions. It seems to lose a tad bit of volume due to the fact that it's just 1 coil but it's not that obvious.

I can go more in depth if you'd like. Just let me know. :)

thanks dr stankface, i am buying a stingray 5 in two more weeks, i just want to get the most versital bass, i have been going back and forth on weather to buy an HH or an HS model, i have played the HH and i like it, but no one i know has the HS so i was wondering if the single coil has a deeper tone than i can get from an HH in the neck position, I would love to hear a sound clip of the HS in single coil position, if anyone has a clip ;)

It would surprice me if the single coil pick-up has more bottom than a humbucker. I´ve never heard or tried a HS Stingray 5 personally so I might be terrible wrong here but what I know about pick-ups in general, I´d say that you should go for a HH Stingray 5 if you want great bottom from the neck PU too. I have a HH and I´m very happy with it but, again, I´ve never tried a HS. But I have a feeling that I might not like it at all if the single coil pick-up has a lower output than a humbucker, if that is true as someone wrote. Switching from the bridge PU to the neck PU and losing gain/volume while doing so in a live situation, I would not like that. Opinions, anyone?

The output is weaker, but the tone is definitely something very different. Unless you are planning on switching PU's during a song (which I don't see why you would), it's not really an issue. I bought the HS mainly because it was the only 2 PU SR5 stocked anywhere NEAR my home in North Carolina (and it was a killer color). I sold both a Fender American P-Bass and American Jazz Bass to purchase my SR5, and of course the SR5 is much different than these both. The single-coil has something unique. It will fill a niche when the ferocious growl is not too desired.

Seriously try it if you can. I don't know if you have access to one to try, but I would imagine that it's very different from the HH. If you want versatility for most every situation, the HS is a strong contender.

No I don´t usually switch PU during a song but I´ve noticed that sound technicians gets confused if the gain from the bass drops from one song to another when playing live. Would be interesting to know about how much less gain the single coil PU deliveres campared to the humbucker. And if you have a HH bass, can you use the neck pick-up in single coil "mode"? How different does that sound compared to a HS Stingray when you use the neck PU on that one? I´m rather sure that the HS configuration wouldn´t excist if it sounded the same with a split humbucker and a single coil.

Oki. To answer my own question. You can´t split the neck humbucker on a HH.

Would be great if there was a similar youtube video with a HS.

if you cant find a stingray 5 HS to play you should play a Sterling HS. the sterlings and sr5s are not exact but have similarities. not suggesting u buy a sterling - but trying one out can give you an idea of the sr5's tone

Yeah... I doubt he was using the single coil PU, but still comforting to know that you can get that kind of tone out of that bass. I love that French funky/house bass tone.

French?

I paused on a close up of Paul Turner, and he was playing in position 3, which is indeed the humbucker + the single coil. Great tone, great player...FANTASTIC band. They are so damn tight.
