I just discovered it, but a little confused what it is. Are these instruments just one-of-kind's that they have laying around the factory? Also, how often do they update the vault?

Kind of all of the above, sometimes it’s current models, sometimes they’re special models (they recently did a bunch of holiday special models). I keep it in my favorites page list and check frequently, it can update at anytime. Usually a few models will pop up every 1-2 months but I don’t think there is a defined cadence.
It's a place for EBMM to sell instruments themselves and they can sell world wide. So they use to make instruments and then dealers would order them. With the Vault, they can do a limited run in a unique configuration and not have to worry whether or not dealers would buy them to sell. I think most dealers are gun shy of special pieces, they may not always be sought after by buyers. At least this is what my take is.
