I think it is just a good mix of single coil and humbucker pups. Ive had the "standard" EMG 81/85 config in other guitars for years and they are great for hard rock and metal, but not for blues and jazz. The 81 in the Luke is great too for heavy music, but the 2 single coils add a nice versatility to the overall sound. I love the combination.

Playability - when a guitar is built better it plays better. And when it plays better, every note you play sounds better, regardless of the electronics. :)

I have a Luke and it's a really great sounding guitar, and I still have a strat with EMG's which sounds really good and seems to hang around, I've tried to sell it a few times but it's still here.... but the Luke is different in sound and feel.. I have tried to play some of Lukes old tunes and licks and it can sound just like a LP and strat from his early recordings so the design is better, if you listen to the Live DVD from Amsterdam.. the Luke is covering all the old tones from years ago very convincingly.. that's it's true strength as an instrument, I'm going to have medium jumbo frets fitted to mine, but thats just my own personal preference.. wonderful instruments and my favourite EBMM...:D

I think it's half the guitar...half the person playing it.

The Luke is such an amazing guitar, it makes you want to explore it's possibilities of tone, and sound, and therefore discover more ways to make it scream when you want it to, and touch that gooey sensitive side when you want it to.

That tone sucks you in....it's got me hooked!

USA, for now, but a Brit at heart
I second that, Lefty.

Gerry, great description, I certainly could not have said it any better! Brasco, i couldn't agree with you more. You speak the truth!

Maybe you guys should ask BP for a job with EBMM in their advertising department

p.s. I can't wait to get my BFR Luke and see how the sound compares to a regular Luke.:D:cool:

Ah, a Luke love thread...must join in. I dont know what it is about these EMG's. I was never an EMG fan prior to my Rad Red Luke. The pickups are balanced for the set. In addition, my Luke got me back to playing the 9-42 set. Floating trem works really well also. In my opinion its the best modern guitar.

Something I found about the Luke, is the height of the EMG's.

When you buy a set of EMG's, the instructions recommend to put the pickups as high as you can possibly get em. On the Luke however, they are not very high atall. In comparison, I find that the height difference helps to take off some of the brittle top end, and instead, it seems that MM have managed, by keeping them not too close to the strings, managed to find a sweet spot in the EMG's.

Texas Finally!
I have always been a big EMG fan, just think they are great PUPS, I modded a Schecter with a set of Zakk Wylde EMG`s and turned it from a pussy cat into a Lion, the reason I am a EBMM fan now and will only own EBMM guitars now is because of the Luke, wanted a guitar with two single and a hum EMG and there it was with the Luke, and the tones were so much better than any other EMG equiped guitar I had ever played, it is because of the superior build og the axe that it sounds better as every EBMM does, just my humble beagle opinion:)
