What makes it sound so good ?
Not the effects but what makes it a killer Riff ?
It sounds kind of sloppy esp the Flange parts. .
When it gets to just before the chorus ( Blue-eyed murder in a side-swiped dress) it brings it back if you know what I mean.
I remember hearing it for the first time when I was a kid and it was so awesome.
It still is.
It is so original.

...because it's Van Halen? ;)

Heh, it's gotta be the riff, man...just so dirty and gritty with that drop-D. Couple that with the driving bassline of one Michael Anthony, and you've got some mean a** string action happening there.

Makes me wanna break something! ;)

I am not much of a Van Halen fan, however, that riff reaches out and slaps you upside the head, knocks you on your tail, then just to rub salt in the wound, it steals your wallet, takes your girl out on a date (by the way, she likes it), and leaves you wishing for the tone, sound, and sheer energy of being able to play that riff. One of my favorites....hey, my wallet is missing and where is my wife? :(  ;)

That whole album sounds angry.
Mean street still give me goose bumps. That pick slide after the
"Lord strike that poor boy down" is one of the best ever recorded
When you are drowning in Pods and stuff. Pull that album out and set your clocks straight.

Yeah...dwf, I know that one kinda stung..lol.
Remeber, I was a drummer first. I was into Bonham, Rich, surf music, sabbath more for the drumming. I liked Alex and all, just never bought their music. Guitar wise, I was more of a Randy Rhoads fan than VH. But, now I have to play VH's stuff because my instructor makes me. He was in a VH cover band...dude can play literally everything by eddie note for note...amazing. He likes my speed and dexderity (sp), but said VH will make me a better guitar player. So he assigns me homework in VH songs and what not. I really appreciate Eddie's playing more so now than ever. I always thought he was innovative and dude can seriously play. I used to have a narrow mindedness about VH because I was into the technical and super fast players like Yngwie, Gilbert and Vai. Age is what caught up to me. I appreciate those players, but, Eddie does one thing great (besides tapping, solos, writing) and that is he plays with alot of soul. That is what I have learned from him.
So, can I come back on the island now? ;)
