It just looks like a third party bridge that the builders of the SUBS just bought in bulk for like $2! I guess imo without the musicman engravement on the bridge really makes the bridge look cheap lol

Other than the engravement, they look just like the regular Stingray/Bongo/Sterling bridges. They've been around since what..1975? I'd say the design is solid.

About poplar being soft, or screws stripping out... Poplar is a VERY fast-growing tree, therefor it is of low density. Understand that usually deciduous trees are called 'hardwoods', even if they are rather soft varieties, while the term 'softwood' is usually reserved for evergreen trees.

A wood may have fibrous, structural strength, yet still be soft in terms of screws stripping out if they are too short or the threading is not wide enough for softer woods. Avoiding short screws or unsuitable threads is not difficult, and some of the softer 'hardwoods' have excellent tone and rewarding strength-to-weight ratios.

The only other liability of such woods is that they do dent more easily. If you are fussy about that, but your bass of choice turns out to be made of poplar, basswood, tulip wood, etc, just choose a finish color that's fairly easy to touch up with touch up paint from the automotive store. Touch-ups are not perfect. If you are very fussy, and you are also a careless klutz, 'soft hardwoods' are not for you.

Note to self: Sell my Bongos.
Don't ignore the qualifier: "if you are very fussy". If you are conflicted cuz maybe you're a Bongo loving fussy klutz, go for some therapy. Live happily ever after. It's the American Way and you deserve nothing less.

If you have doubts about the SUB Sterling why not wait until you can afford the more expensive guitar. The SUB Sterling however would be an excellent buy and give you many years of trouble-free playing. All the best with your decision.
My dilemma precisely - think I may bite the bullet and go for the Sterling straight away!

Good choice. I bought a Sterling for my Mom. She has small hands, and she LOVES the bass!

Life is about getting what you really want. Anything less than that you won't be happy. When you will be happy you won't need any other person to tell you.

I know I didn't help.

How 'bout "fussy and somewhat demented"?

As in my case.

How about I just take good care of my tools? I skin the crap out of my knuckles though.
