Not sure if you're trying to tune BEAD, but if you are... I recently bought a set of heavy gauge strings "especially made for detuning" and strung them up on my Stingray tuned C G C F (drop D down a whole step). It works well for some of the Godsmack songs I play which are in that tuning.

I only bought the strings as an experiment and because they were seriously discounted by my local bass shop. The E string is 111 gauge I think. Feels tight enough.

If you're not detuning then just ignore this post. :p

Take old Slinky's off, then put new Slinky's on.

Amazing Chuck, absolutely amazing. Sometimes I just sit back in awe and ask myself "just how DOES he do it". I mean, where does such wisdom come from? BTW, do you have to do yours in a mirror? :D

Take a look here.

Funny. That's more or less exactly what I do, but I've never seen that page... :)

However, two differences:
- I've never put graphite in the nut, but that's a really good idea especially for the strings that go to a Hipshot Xtender key!

- I don't pull gently on the strings during tuning. I pull hard. If you have enough tension in the windings around the string posts, there's hardly going to be any tuning issues... and the strings react much more realibly on slight turns of the tuning keys.

Same here. You can actually feel them stretch a little bit, or really it's more like they seat into the tuners a little tighter.

I also put at least a 90 degree bend into the string before I cut it, and then cut the bent piece leaving about 1/8" or so of it (like a hook). Been doing it for years and somebody told me it keeps the windings on the string core tight (fact or fiction?). I then fold that hook back against the string (180 degrees) and compress it as hard as I can with the pliers so the whole thing will fit inside the hole in the tuner. Even works on B strings if you squeeze it enough...
