hi so my question is pretty straightforward, what is the difference between the sterling 5 and the stingray 5. since the sterling was supposedly created as a 4 string version of the stingray 5. is it purely aesthetic or is there a technical difference as well.

There is a wealth of information on this subject on the forum, as it has been discussed in great detail here before. Do a search, you shall soon know the differences.

Here are the main differences:

Stingray 5
Larger body
Larger pickguard (front mounted electronics)
Slightly wider and larger neck
Alnico pickup magnets
6 bolt neck attachment/Block heel

Sterling 5
Smaller body
Classic round/oval pickguard (rear mounted electronics)
Slightly narrower smaller neck (same string spacing though)
Ceramic pickup magnets
5 bolt neck attachment/Contoured heel

Note: Pre-Sterling 5 Stingray 5 basses had ceramic pickup magnets. When the Sterling 5 was released, they changed over to Alnico, like their 4-string counterparts.

Very early Stingray 5s (1989-1992ish) had Alnico, if I am not mistaken.
