What is with the black and tan?

This has been bugging me for a while. In the last few years of my travels, I have stopped at various Guitar Centers all over California. I like to go in and see what they have in EBMM basses. The black and tan is defiantly a staple. Here is the part that gets to me. They almost always are lighter and play better than any other EBMM bass they have in stock. Some of these basses look really look worn too. Is the all maple neck more stable or does EBMM have a special setup crew for those basses.

If you are referring to Black basses with maple fingerboards I have been told that this is simply the most requested color scheme for Stingray basses. I bought a slightly used one this year, thinking I would never want such a "boring" color. Well I can tell you, this bass not only plays and feels fantastic, but it looks amazing in person and I get tons of compliments on it. Who knew!

Actually, after I get my Roasted Bongo, that will be my next bass. I love that combo as well.

That is THE color combo on that bass - how can it not be!! Certainly all EBMM "necks" on any instrument is equally stable.

As far as the so -called "worn" look - they get a lot of play from the customers no doubt.

OK, I did a poor job of poking fun at the black and tan color combo. I realize its the top seller in basses. I have started looking for a lighter alternative to my 30th stingray. I am thinking of getting an SR5. I would like to find it in another color combo other than black and tan in the clearance section of GC. There are other colors available, but they always seem heavier or need some work. So I was trying to make it look like its always stacked in favor of that color combination. Sorry for the lame attempt. This is what I get for posting when I am tired.

I just picked up a black Sterling with maple neck and want to change out the pickguard to make it pop a bit more. Anybody do something similar with some pics to share? I'm thinking something sparkle, color, etc....

When I order my black and tan, I think I am going to order it as a Classic. I love the birds eye maple neck on my other classic along with the string through body and mutes. I think the black and tan would compliment my other classic quit well.

Jaydawg, there is a classic 5 black and tan at the GC in arvada. Nice but not as nice of neck as my sub 5 has. Otherwise...

Thanks for the heads up. I still a ways from buying one and will also be ordering a 4 string. I have 1 5 string bass right now and it simply never gets used because that low B throws me of by a string every time. But, if I am in Arvada anytime soon, I may just have to visit that GC and play it for a while to satisfy my itch.
