I find myself using the 2nd position (outer coils) on my SR5 HH probably 85% of the time with my band. With my current eq settings (bass and low mids very slightly boosted, high mids and highs flat on my MB Tube 800 into MB 4x10 cab) the neck pickup solo sounds too un-defined and the bridge pickup too defined.

But I was thinking t might open up different pickup switch positions if I EQ'd the amp while say, at the 3rd position (both pump on), and got a usable sound there first.

How do you all do it?

To Be honest I'm flat on my EQ unless the room dictates otherwise, so I really leave the EQ of the amp to the surroundings.

If I'm playing my Acme cabinet I add a little VPF from my Markbass.

As far as active EQ on the bass.

I usually just roll some lowend in a bit on the bass itself.

If I'm playing a HH and using position 2 I add a touch of mids just to add to the hollowness to it. (BTW I'm not saying hollow in a bad a way).

+1

I use the EQ on the bass either to taylor a certain sound or to get a good average for all of the positions (or at least those I use). Regarding the PU selector, I actually think of it in a way to add or remove definition to the sound. I got the best results by adjusting the bass to the have bridge PU (classic StringRay sound) to be a bit more "aggressive" or "defined" then I'd like when playing the bass solo. Then it works out beautifully in band context. YMMV

I adjust my amp and bass settings every time I play. That's what they are there for. Otherwise, only the volume knob would be needed. I switch between my bongo and sterling and they sound different so I have to adjust for the type of music being played. I guess if you only use one bass and play only one kind of music, fewer adjustments would be needed but that would be pretty boring.
