I am down to choosing between 1 of 2 guitars: the Luke or Petrucci models. I was going to buy a Petrucci but the Luke is very intriguing to me. I mainly play in the style of Satriani/Timmons/Dream Theater type of music. I just sold my EBMM Petrucci 7 string because I am just not a 7 string guy. Had the guitar for 4 years and absolutely loved it hence the reason to going back to it in the 6 string form. I currently have a Schecter with EMG's and like them. I guess I'm torn between the 2 and can only justify one. Are the single coils on the Luke firey enough for lead work? There is no way to try before I buy. Should I go with what I am familiar with or branch out and try something new? Thanks!

Hmmmm....that's a toughy. I've never tried a Luke but I must say that i to am intrigued by them. I love the way they look and I'm certain that those single coils pack more than enough punch for lead work. Check out some of Lukes playing on you tube and you can get a good idea of the sounds a Luke can produce.

I have a JP6 which I love and I'm more inclined to play the sort of stuff you listen to. So a JP6 may well be more suited to that style. Personally, I think it's the neck profile that could be the biggest factor as they are very different from each other. Since you're used to the JP neck on the JP7 you've already owned you might find the Luke quite different to begin with. But I'm sure you'd get used to it.

I'm sure someone who has palyed both will chime in, but oddly enough, I've found in the 13 months I've been a member here that most people either love one or the other. So that may give you an indication of how different they are. You could go for a silo as that may occupy some middle ground between a JP6 and a Luke. Besides, general consensus here.........everybody loves a SILO!!!!

Good Luck!!

I forgot to add something:

I have no experience with the EMG 85. I am not a metal player but can it handle heavier rhythm playing like the Petrucci? I will say that I was not a fan of the D-Sonic pickup on my 7 string Petrucci (I liked the original stock pickup better).

Does the tremelo bridge on the the Luke pull up or does it just dive? I only use the tremelo for light vibrato and the floating bridge on the Petrucci was great.

The only things I can see that I might miss is the 24 fret neck and the tremelo system. Other than that the Luke looks great. I don't sell guitars often at all so I want to make sure I make an educated decision before I buy.

As much as I love the Luke, I simply can't get to terms with the EMGs on it so out of the two, I'd chose the Petrucci.

Still, I think I'd look into the good old Silhouette if I were you: an amazingly versatile instrument... that's cheaper than both siggies.

Cheers
