Mostly by ear, but some of the more hard or classical stuff I'll use sheet music.
I'll download the music and follow along to get the gist of the song.
I only have a few tab books a van halen and an old ACDC best of tab book that i have owned for years

I like the guitar dynamics in Panama.

There are alot of tabs available on the net, although not all of it is accurate, but it's there. Just do a search for <"band name" tabs> and check the links till you find one that looks to be right.

Tabs in conjunction with the audio sure speed up the learning process :D

wow you must be ambitious to learn that song.
6 1/2 minutes of guitar shredding
what is the time signature ?
I found with most of the songs I learn I get the song looping in my head one day and the only way to get it out is if i listen to it then learn it on guitar.
I have learned some pretty sappy / cheesy songs as well -songs that I won't fess up to that I know

Currently, we are working on:

Paradice City-------Guns-N-Roses
Still of the Night---Whitesnake
Shook Me All Night Long---AC/DC
Hair of the Dog-----Nazereth
Cochise???------Audioslave

I'm not much on newer music, but I really dig the Audioslave tune, and Paradice City just flat out rocks. Still of the Night is going to take some time to get the song tight.

Teaching guitar means you have to learn a wide range of stuff to keep all the various students happy...this week its been Mobscene by Marilyn Manson and also the Dueling Banjos!!! How different can you get? ;)

For myself, this week I'm learning Lenny by SRV.

BTW for really good tabs and a midi capable tab editor go to :

Cheers

Our last rehersal we started Tie Your Mother Down - we generally learn a new song every month or two now (ya, we're old and lazy ;) ), but we've reached a point where it seems that every new tune we put together sees something forgotten from the repetoire over a couple months...

Hot for teacher by duh!
a slew of Kim Mitchell

I like to put on a cd and play along. I have been doing this with Van Halen 1,2,3,4,5 for now, and Kim Mitchell,s aural fixations and greatest hits, In addition to Walter Rossi's best of.

I am 14 all over again. Well for a married man with 2 kids it's not that bad of a midlife chrissis. Much less damaging than a Corvette and Girls in there 20's

I use a roland ready strat on this song, the sitar setting on my roland gr-33 MAKES this song sound soooo awesome. I love DT, and spend at least a few hours a week working on their material.

I am currently pricing Carvin 7 strings so I can make the chore a little easier.
