I'm ready for another round of doing something about this.
When comparing open and fretted strings, especially on my Stingray, there is too much of a difference. The open string on MM instruments is very deep and piano like, the fretted one muffled, especially on the low E. I noticed that on a recent Bongo, too. In my last round of messing with this I installed tapered strings - Dean Markley SR2000s 47-107. But that didn't do anything about the problem and the SR2000s are generally too bright for my taste.
What direction should I go here? Which strings? Go lighter or heavier?
No fuzz please. I don't expect miracles, just moving a bit to a deeper tone that has more different things happening on the fretted E.
