Bass players in particular: If you had a chance to sit in with any of the pro drummers (living or dead) that we all know and respect, who would it be?

It doesn't have to be just one choice, as many of us have varied personal tastes, and like to do different types of gigs.

Here are my choices (in no particular order):

Steve Jordan
John Bonham
"Fish"
Uriel Jones/"Pistol" Allen (team)
"Papa Zita" Benjamin
Joey Kramer
Stewart Copeland
Butch Trucks/Jaimoe (team)

I may think of a couple more...but I gotta get home to my bass!

Let's hear from the rest of you.

Hey Shamus,

I saw by your sig line that you are a Jamerson fan - but now I see the three main Funk Brothers drummers listed!

So, I assume you've seen Standing in the Shadows of Motown.....

I wrote this in another post (I responded to Janice):

re; Standing in the Shadows of Motown - OMG, what a documentary that is. I cried a lot the first time I saw it. Now that I own the DVD, I've seen it a bunch of times - I still cry at the end. But hell yeah, it's a total must-see - amazing especially if you grew up on Motown, but even for someone who didn't, I think the power in it lies in the fact that the unsung heroes FINALLY got some recognition, props, and love.

I really liked all the outtakes on the DVD, but I wish they had included more footage of the dinner with the Funks and also more outtakes of the interviews with the Funks and the concert.

You bet I've seen it! I own the movie along with the "Temptations" bonus movie.

Both are very moving, insightful (well, "Standing..." anyway), entertaining, and inspirational (especially for musicians!).

I think that of the three Motown drummers (all of whom I would want as a right-hand man), "Pistol" was the one I dug the most! He looked like he truly loved his job!

I've had the pleasure of playing live and recording with Travis Barker on many occasions.Let the bashing begin :(

screw bashing ... he's sick!!! on a side note i was almost/kindof in a band with Craig way back in the day - Craigs the dude that plays (or maybe used to play) lead guitar for the Transplants who Travis also drums for.

There's a Temptations bonus movie?? When I got the DVD (which my husband bought for me) I got the bonus double CD with all the stripped down Motown trax, and all the concert songs on it.

Yeah, Pistol Allen! He was the one in the documentary that I couldn't help noticing the most. You could tell he was having the time of his life! And it was the time of his life, literally - that documentary was filmed in December 2001-January 2002 and Pistol died in June 2002. So sad. But it's good that he lived long enough to do the filming.

Yeah, the Tempt's movie was a shot-for-TV deal that was (and I think still is) available on DVD, although it's probably no longer part of the "Motown" package.

On the subject of the FB's, I should have gone to see them in Oakland a couple of years ago when I had the opportunity. They've since split into 3 camps, with both Joe Messina and Eddie Willis retiring outright.

Right now, it's Jack Ashford with a backup band, Joe Hunter with a backup band, and Bob Babbitt with Uriel Jones contemplating a third band.

Yeah, I heard they'd sort of split it up - there was an initial break with Slutsky's whole production of them touring together - which Jim Messina left because his wife was ill - then I heard there were 2 camps, and now it's 3 different camps?

Wonder what happened.

Yes, I wish I had seen them on that tour as well! I heard good things about it.

When I was in Philadelphia last February (visiting my dad, family, friends) - the FBs (I don't know which camp) were playing the Keswick. And I really wanted to go, but it was the Sunday night after I'd flown in, it was snowing, and I was starting to come down with a sinus infection, yadda yadda yadda....anyway I didn't go.

Hey Shamus - are you going to the Event in San Luis Obispo?

Wish I was (I live just a few hours away), but I may be in NYC the following week.

Hopefully, there will be more EB factory tours with EB Forums involved!

Update 8/19: Booked two nights (9/16-17) at the Motel 6 North SLO. Bringing my beloved Sabre and my Fender Bassman 25 practice amp to keep from jones-ing.

Headed to DC 9/28 for a four-day visit, with a rail trip from DC to NYC on 9/29 (spending the day in Mid-Town).

Think I'll stop by Manny's to check out some EBMM's!
