What year is this Stingray?

I do own a red Stingray 4 string with serial no. B04803. Is it correct, that this one is a PRE-EB 1977 make? Can anybody give me some more details on it? Thanks from Germany. Helge

Edit: Looking at Gavs site myself, I do think you can safely assume that your bass is a 1977.

Edit again: Awwwwww, ok so it's supposed to be two zeros. Anyway, who could mistake a 1977 for a 1997? Im just asking...

You don't seem to have enough digits in your serial number. Is it B04xxx or B004xxx?
If it's B004, then it can fall in somewhere around the late 1977 era. But according to Gav's site, in 1997 there was B04xxx 5-digit serials.

Hi Helge and welcome to the Forum.

Pre-Ernie Ball Sting Ray Basses were prefixed with a "B" and followed by six digits.

Some Ernie Ball serials during 1996 and 1997 were prexifed with a "B" but followed with only five digits. If you've recorded your serial number correctly then your Bass will fall within this period. It's probably 1997 (but could be 1996).

As an afterthought:

Some Ernie Ball Basses from 1985 to 1988 used the Pre-EB numbering system aswell ie "B" followed by 6 digits.

An Ernie Ball Bass will clearly show "Ernie Ball" on the headstock logo, will have 4 fret dot markers past the 12th fret and the string retainer will be on A & D strings.
