I have a chance to pick up one of these and would like to as a back up. I've found a pretty clean one. What's the going rate?

I pickup up a nice used one a couple of years ago on ebay for $500. No case. Reckon that was about market at the time.

I paid 650 for a fretless one that was in like new condition. I only paid that much because it was so nice. I bought a sr5 for 635 once, it had a few scratches but otherwise was in great shape. Kind of depends on the seller.

Just paid 4 bills for a one owner, gigging musician (read mojo) Sub5. I consider it a "gateway" bass into the 5 string world, however, I doubt I'll ever sell it.

They should do free shipping and maybe give a discount too if you ask nicely.

Not eggzacklee free, but they will send it to
your nearest GC branch for $12. Pretty low
cost compared to the usual $40 to $50 for a
used bass [lotsa places ship NEW stuff free].
Plus, I'd rather have my bass waiting at the
local GC than waiting on my front porch, for
me or whoever happens upon it ...

I want a Sub 5 so I can strip the finish, and have a nice bright sparkle one instead

Everyone should have one including you sparkly guys.

I always liked them black, they go well with my black clothing.

how did you search for it? I searched GC and didn't find that one.
I had trouble finding it, too. For some reason it didn't come up when I searched for "SUB". Put "Music Man" in Keywords. Select "basses" from the category. Put 0 - $1000 into the price range and expand the search distance to 2100 miles from your zip code. It is about 18 listings down. No picture or stars for a condition rating. It's at the Greenwood, Indiana store, (317) 884-3887.

Best of luck - from what I've seen, they are priced approx 53.333% to 66% the value of a used regular 'Ray. I really love the white coloured one with replacement black pickguard.

I was tracking them on eBay for a few months before I scored one around July for a price that would get me banned if I disclosed it :)eek: - I believe the Seller mislisted it and I was the only person to come across it) and I was seeing between $450 & $600, dependent on condition (your typical headstock dings were pretty apparent, body dings brought them down more) but I saw more than a few that I'd consider only "Good" and below (major dings and "chunks" out of the body, neck paint worn down to the wood, hardware rust, bad refinishes, etc...) still sell for above $400. At that much of a mark-up, the SBMMs would look better to me...

I called the Indiana store when it first popped up and talked to a very knowledgeable Ernie Ball playing associate. I decided to pass on it because it had a few more flaws than I was looking for. I think we ended up rating it a 6.5-7/10. This appears to be the same bass so I think my idea of a "4 Star" rating is a bit different than theirs.

My decision paid off as yesterday I was fortunate to pick up a nearly perfect grahite SUB 5 with the 2-band active eq. It came with a Music Man molded case, Schaller straplocks, a Comfort Strapp, and a box of new EXL170-5 nickel wounds. It also is on the lighter side at 9 lbs. 9 oz. I'm super happy with it and I'm going to be on the lookout for more SUB's.
