Hey guys,
I'm new here so you'll have to educate me :) I've been looking around here and it seems that there is a big deal with the original Blue Dawn sparkle finish. So much so that it's now being sold as a LE for this year. Is this a rare color or something. Just wondering what the deal is because I own an original run Blue Dawn JP6. What's the deal?

I posted pics in the "official pics of my guitar" thread if anyone would like to see my guitars. I have others but only posted the EBMM ones.

Basically, it came down to this. The sparkle finishes (all were awesome in my opinion) were not selling well enough to justify EB continuing to use those colors as an option. The cleaning of the paint guns created havoc on other non-sparkle finishes. One piece of sparkle getting onto a black finish caused that guitar/bass to have to be re-painted. Not very cost effective. So, EB quit having those finishes. Once something is discontinued, people began to want them more and more. It became a weekly forum post about bringing back the finish. Big Poppa and others from EB explained why it wouldn't happen time and time again.

We, the knuckleheads, are die hard fans of the sparklies....so, we want what we could not have. Funny how that works eh? Keep in mind, I believe, black is thier best selling color.

Now, Blue Dawn is offered as a Limited Edition color. Same as the original except the 12th fret inlay.....pics are somewhere on here.

You have an original one and that is awesome. Now, you can get a brother for the original with a Limited Edition (I know, shameless plug! ) to keep you other one company!

I think the new Blue Dawn looks a little darker and has more contrast in the burst. I think it's also more...uh...blue. :D IIRC, EBMM have some newer folks manning the paint guns. So, that may explain why it might look a bit different now.

they stopped making the blue dawns in 2005, and now they're back as a limited edition...

No dude they stopped making Blue Dawn in 2002-2003'ish.

It's back because people have been asking since it was discontinued for them to bring it back.

Why didn't they just use separate paint guns for sparkle finishes? Does each sparkle finish have a certain kind of metal flake in it? Or are paint guns too costly?

I am not sure of the cost of a paint gun. But, they would have to build a seperate spray booth, conform to California environmental laws, and all kinds of stuff. Again, it was the "not selling" part that caused the colors to be discontinued. With that said, they would have this extra equipment and booth and it would not have been cost effective. Keep in mind, this is only my observation and opinion as I don't work there and I don't know their business. But, I would hate to put a state of the art spray facility in place and then see the line discontinued. The clean up of the sparkle itself would be costly just to open up the booth back up for the regular spray colors already available. I think the actual sparkle themselves just reek havoc on a booth, guns, lines, and the atmosphere (as in them floating around).

Makes sense, the well being of the business is far more important. Plus, these limited edition runs are all possible because of it, so I'm not complaining. Gives me something to look forward to.

What about Purple Dawn? I'd be up for that.

This was an idea when they were thinking about making a forum only instrument. But the whole deal fell apart because nobody could agree on anything and everything just got out of hand.

I think that Purple Dawn would be a great 08 LE, but that's me. I'd like to see a test piece, I'm sure that many would fall in love with this color. :D
