Help! Whats the difference on the JP6 BFR.......

Im still learning a bunch of things on the guitar n stuff. So I wanted to know the difference between a JP6 BFR and a JP6 BFR Baritone. Also what does a Baritone do. Also I been noticing that some come with a Piezo, what is that and what does it do. I know I sound like a noob, but im sure there is a non-noob out there that can help me, haha. One last thing, does the JP6 come with string locks so it wont come outta tune. Its says it does but not sure if they are on the tuning knob or what. Thanks for the help.

OK. A baritone guitar sits in the range between a regular 6 string guitar and a bass guitar. I think I'm right in saying a EBMM baritone (silhouette bass) would come to you tuned either A-a or E-e. Something like that anyway. The JP BFR Baritone is a new venture for musicman in that it's a signature model Baritone. But also that the scale length is in between a normal guitar and a regular baritone. I think that's right anyway. It's because ( again if memory serves me right) that JP didn't like the feel of switching from guitar to baritone as they would feel quite different. The only real difference between a BFR JP6 and BFR JP baritone is that the body is slightly bigger and the neck is slightly longer. I think!

A Piezo system basically turns your guitar into an acoustic. On the bridge saddles are pressure pads that use crystals to pick up the vibrations from the body of the guitar. Again I'm no expert, but I know enough to say that it sounds amazing. The Piezo system installed on the JP series in the best I've heard and many here would agree.

And yes the JP's come with locking tuners. Basically the strings are locked into the tuning pegs to avoid slippage when bending strings or using the trem. It also makes changing strings a breeze. It'll take about 20 seconds to change a string with that system as opposed to a minute or two with a floyd rose. However, some argue that tuning is a bit more stable with a floyd rose. I have to say that I've never really noticed on my JP6. Besides, on the off chance you need to tune you can't run out of tuning the way you do on a floyd rose bridge.

i love this response. thanx soo much. makes sense for the piezo. As for the Baritone, I understand that I can tune lower than a standard JP6 (not sure if i got that correct). Can I still play it in a standard E tuning (sounds noobish, just trying to figure this out before I start saving up for that perfect baby). Also does the Baritone model come with the piezo system as well? I would figure the baritone would cost more. If anything, my heart is still set on the JP6 baham burst. You can't really tune a baritone guitar up to standard E-e tuning. Because of the scale length, the string tension would be quite high. I would imagine that the JP baritone costs more than the BFR JP6. But don't quote me on that. All JP BFRs come with piezo. The only options really are the colour. Everything else is standard on those models.

Personally I'd go with a regular 6 string model...........but! You could go with a 7 stringer. That may give you some compromise between the JP6 and a Baritone.

It's not that it can be tuned lower, it's that it is normally tuned lower and can't be tuned up. A baritone guitar is usually a normal guitar tuned to either B or A below standard guitar tuning. It also has a larger scale, meaning that the neck is longer and you have more distance between the frets (think in the direction of a bass neck, only not that extreme).

The Silhouette Bass Guitar (EBMM's own baritone model) is somehow special; it can be ordered in baritone tuning (either A or B, I forget), but it comes standard tuned in E to e, an octave below standard guitar tuning. Which also is an octave above standard bass tuning. So it's literally a bass guitar.

The JP Baritone however, has a neck scale between regular and baritone guitars, like already mentioned. It comes standard in Bb tuning, the strings are much thicker, and you'll always be playing a tritone beneath what you're normally used to in standard tuning guitar. If you want to play standard tuning stuff, I wouldn't go with a baritone unless you really want one for some special experimentation. It's a lower range guitar, simply put. And yes, it does come with a piezo system, just like the other JP BFR models.

awesome guys. thanx soo much for the info. Now i've narrowed down my guitar choice without any stress. Looks like the JP6 bahama burst for me. Wondering (like a bunch of other companies out there) if there is gonna be a new version of the JP6 coming for 2009 or not. Like some with the white bound around the neck (i already mentioned it in another thread) or any new features or something. That'll be the only new feature that would keep me waiting (very minimal feature and has no tone, sound, playability enhancement watsoever. just aesthetically pleasing the the eye) Is a baham burst with the white bound.....i been obsessed with those types of necks. haha. I have this whole image of my perfect guitar, and stuff. But yea, what are the best sites can i go to purchase a JP6. Music man site?, bass central?, guitar center? Just so i know for future refence. Thanx guys once again for the help with no sarcasm or fun poking, haha. Im no kid, just picked up the guitar about 2 1/2 years ago with an epiphone les paul. Then totally forgot about a bad ass band named dream theater i used to listen to back when I was a drummer and totally into Mike Portnoy (still am big time). Thats was almost 10 years ago. haha. But got into John Petrucci and bought an Ibanez RG. its used, so im gonna buy a new Ibanez RG. And for my main purchase is gonna be a JP6, which is gonna blow any Ibanez out the water (with mabe a few exceptions of a few). Pretty much just wanna have a collection of guitars by the time I start recording my solo material. Total collection I would like to have.:


-old Ibanez RG
-new Ibanez RG
-JP6 BFR bahama burst
-JP6 pearl red burst
-epiphone les paul
-fender strat (this is for my main other guitar influence.....David Gilmour)
-gibson les paul studio
-mabe a JP7 (gotta have a 7 string in my arsenal)
