Answer-never..Why do I ask..I have both. My quest is to get my p bass to sound similar to my stingray without adjusting all the knobs on my amp(Ampeg B2R). This has been an ongoing project that has been fun. 1st I changed my KOA body to ash like my stingray. 2nd I did a body thru bridge for the strings just to add in the resonation. my Stingray just sings sooo nice. Currently I have Seymour Duncan SPB2 pickups. I read that maybe they should be Lindy Fralins. I don't know. Should I add a j bass pickup? Don't tell me to add a Stingray pickup because they are not easy to come by plus too expensive when they do show up,what about aftermarket MM pickups. Anybody that has a pbass for a second instrument that did this quest, please reveal your solutions. Should I look at Aguilar preamps? I love my Stingray and it's sound. I also love the feel of my p bass(USACG neck).I just want to love it's sound..OR is all lost and I should just get another Stingray.

Two of the defining sonic aspects of a Stingray are the electronics and the pickup placement. Yes, you can get "similar" sounding electronics, but with a pickup in the traditional pbass position, you will not be able to get close sonically to a Ray sound.

And since this is a MM board, mosts peoples recommendations will be to get a Stingray, in this case maybe an HS or HH which can also pull off a decent pbass sound.

The bridge also plays a huge part in the sound. The mass of the bridge and the bolts buried in the body that join the bridge to the body.

I just accept them as different but play an SR or Bongo 99% of the time.

I've been trying to get my Jazz to sound similar to my Stingray. In the end, I always end up stickin' the Jazz back in the closet & just playing my Stingray. :D

Just get a HH SR. Soloing that neck bucker is P bass heaven. :)

Yes, but he's trying to go the other way. He wants his PBass to sound like a Stingray.

My solution--sell the PBass, and use that money and the money you were going to spend on upgrades to the PBass to buy another used Stingray.

I have both, but I never want my P's to sound like Ray's. The P's are for when I want that sound.
You will never get it to sound like a Ray since the pickup is way closer to the neck.

That's what I was trying to say. Get the StingRay and ever wanted a P bass tone, it's there.

Thanks everybody for your thoughts. I was hoping for a more technical solutions. This has been an ongoing project. Has anyone thrown in an aftermarket MM pickup in a pbass at the sweet spot? I wish there was a store where you could insert and remove pickups for trial before purchasing. I really don't want to sell my p bass. I am just having fun. Also my earlier question on Aguilar preamps. what do they sound like? Thanks again..

You might have better luck finding help to modify a competitor's product with aftermarket parts here:

URetros are good preamps... try one of those and a badass 2 bridge and see how close that gets you....

though that would total up to be about a $350 mod ... yikes!

you'll still end up needing an MM pickup in the sweet spot...

sounds like a fun project but im guessing its gonna be a tough goal to acheive w/o a lot of mods and $

Why yes I have!

MIM P bass with MIM J neck, Hi-A P pickup, Nordstrand MM4.2 pickup, Bart NTBT 2 band preamp. You could get both tones individually with no problems. Chris Forshage did the work. I've switched to 5 strings so the bass is gone.

Now that's interesting. Picture is worth a thousand words. Thanks. Looks like I'll be saving up to try this.
