I recently bought a second hand Axis SuperSport which I have since found out is from 2002.

I don't know any further history about the guitar other than it seems to have been very well looked after, as there was more or less zero signs of being used before.

I have seen the video on the EB Youtube of how to apply the oil and wax, and am able to get them easliy enough but what I don't know is, whether it's time for my Axis to have a fresh coat.

This is the first Musicman I have owned and have never felt the neck of a 'from factory, brand new' MM guitar with oil/wax blend finish to compare it to. Plus, there are no local dealers at all that have them for me to go and compare to either.

For all I know the guitar may never have had a fresh coat since 2002 when it was made, but I feel like the neck is not very oil/waxy and feels almost like bare wood.

Is there a positive way to tell whether it's due a new coat? It isn't dirty (at least not visibly), but I suspect it might be in need of some fixing up to get back to the famous feel of these necks.

If you are unsure, there really isn't any harm in cleaning it, and then re oiling and waxing it. that way at least you'll know it was done.

Usually it needs to be done when the neck starts getting dirty, or when the neck starts to get rough. I've got an SR4 that needs to be redone, but I'm unfortunately lazy. I've even got the oil, wax, oil soap, super fine sandpaper, etc but yeah, lazy.

I rarely if ever use Tru Oil. When I feel any resistance to my hand over the back of the neck I use synthetic 0000
scotch brite and lightly rub down the neck. I also use Carnuba Waxfrom Dunlop after and it's all sealed up and smooth again.
The only EBMM I had to reseal was one I bought from west texas and was dry as a bone.
