I'm sure it was circa 1982-83 for the Pre-EB Rays...i've seen too many of them to have not been after-market modifications (the Trans Reds).
As to the early Ernie Ball Rays, I've seen a lot of clear pgs here aswell but but don't know if they were a feature or after-market.

On some finishes they look absolutely stunning...Translucent Bluebursts :)

just speculating...dealers might have stocked some 3rd party clear PGs for Stingrays and Sabres and installed them themselves.

I'm kind of curious as why there are so many clear PG's on many older Stingrays. My '88 has a really beat up one that looks about as old as the bass or older.

Hm. I think I've seen to many 80's transparent red StingRays with a clear pickguard that I can't belive they were all modified. However, I've been wrong in my beliefs before...

I think a clear pickguard was fitted on some of the pre-EB Cutlass basses?? They are rare instruments but the ones I've seen have had this.

As Oli says, many Trans red 80's/90s Rays seem to have them as well - I recently was invloved in bidding on Ebay for a very sweet 87 trans red 2 band - and asked the seller if he had the original pickguard (the pics showed a clear one) - I think he felt quite insulted by the question as he'd bought the bass new with it  - not sure whether it was fitted by the dealer who sold it though.

Can BP or someone from EBMM enlighten us on this???

As you may have seen from THIS thread I will soon be the owner of one such bass. According to the salesman they came that way. He was actually a really knowledgeable bass player. I initially told him 'Yeah I like the bass but that color and the guard can't be original...' He then informed me how they made 'some crazy colors in those years like red and blue.'

I myself doubt it that so many dealers would install a clear guard on THOSE particular finishes. I think you would see a lot more natural Rays with a clear guard if dealers were doing that sort of swap.

I agree - seems to be particularly trans red, and some blue which have them.

PS nice 83 trans red
