First off I will say damn you JP and Big Poppa, I'm forever doomed to play JP guitars!! :D

Of all the different guitars I've played/owend over the years including various PRS, many a Terry McInturff, Fender and G&L strats, Gibby LPs and even an Axis, I've never bonded with these guitars like I do my JP6 and JP7. While even after almost a year, I'm still getting used to having a 7 string, the JPs from an ergonomic feel just feel right to me and nothing else does. Having said that, I'm still a sucker for that heavy/woody/slightly muddy tone from a Gibson style guitar be it a LP, Explorer, SG, etc. But I don't see myself going down the Gibson road, my heart is with EBMM guitars, specifically the JP model.

My musical style varies between classic/hard/alternative rock and metal, but ideally I wish I were a combo of Pet, James Hetfield and EVH. I have a shot at playing like Hetfield, I carry the rhythm duties in my band and tend to gravitate to the typical galloping horse downstrokes but not nearly as fast as the mighty Het.

So, I want to stay in the JP family and probably would gravitate to another JP7. Would switching to a BFR JP7 with the mahogany tone block and mahogany neck get me there? Or is there a custom build option possible ala some of the beauties that came to the NYC clinic this summer that would pair up a mahogany body to mahogany neck? Is the Koa top/mahogany body option available for the JP7?

Josh, the Koa's are only available in JP6 BFR's. Why not just go with a regular BFR 7? You'll still have the mahogany neck and the mahogany tone block that will give you a plenty thick enough tone. EB doesn't have any custom options available like that as of yet.

You've obviously have alot more knowledge of those guitars than me, but why not just change the pickups to some Les Paul ones. 90% of the tone is from the pickups imo. Couldn't hurt to try, and alot cheaper then dropping thousands.

Hey Phil, thanks for the info on the Koa. I think I'm still daydreaming about that rosewood necked/walnut topped sweetie from the clinic :) That guitar sounded HUGE. ernie, if you see this thread, how is that guitar?

Slingy, unfortunately I don't think a pickup swap would help as much considering the construction of the standard JPs, basswood body/maple neck.
