The guy at the music store has several brand new MMSR. The problem is should I get the one with the 2band EQ or the 3 band. The 2 band I can get for a good deal. But I don't want to be dissappointed with it. THe 2 band is all black with Rosewood fretboard and matching headstock. The 3 band is kind of plain looking. Any advice?

2band or 3band is more "personal preference" than "potential disappointment". If they've got both can you give them a test spin?

I was chasing the "as close to the original 'Ray as possible" vibe when I was shopping and went with a 2band. But it's not as if I thought the 3band was inferior, just different.

Go with your gut feeling, everyone has a different opinion as to what is best.
Oh yea; Welcome to the forum!

I have both types.

The 2 band sounds great.
A little extra vibe, people relate it to the original StingRay.

The 3 band sounds great too.
Has the mid knob, very convienent.

With the 2 band, I just adjust mids at the amp.

Realize, the 2 band eq also has the cut & boost feature on the knobs.
They don't have the center detents, as the 3 band does.

I agree with the others.

They are both worthwhile.
Buy the one that you like the best.

Don't forget to post us a picture.

is this the case with the SUB as well?

if so, putting it halfway means flat? or is the preamp boost (or cut) only?

I have a 2 band and don't miss the mid control. Not having center dentents actually forces me to pick a point where it sounds good.

Can't comment the 3 band pre-amp on the 'Rays, but the 4 band on the Bongo is great and my maple FB 3 band Sterling is loud and clear. I have other basses with 3 band eqs and some with only a tone knob. I'm happy with the tone knob too. Different character is all.

Of the two, pick the bass that speaks to you and don't worry about specs or colours. If neither one speaks to you, keep looking. My particular Stingray stole my heart, but it could easily have been a Bongo or a Sterling.

Don't worry about the 2eq. It's wonderful.

I haven't played a SUB.

But from what I've read. There are 2 SUB StingRay4 versions. One passive, one active.

The band active EQ SUB StingRay has identical electronics to the regular StingRay w/2 band eq.

So that means that like my StingRay, the 2 band eq has boost and cut for bass & treble. No Center detents.

To answer your question, about 1/2 turned, you should have flat response.

Someone jump in , if that's wrong on the SR4 SUB's.

Yep the 2eq on the SR4 is boost and cut with no center detents. Dunno about the SUBs but I suspect the same.

I haven't a SR but I do have an SR5 and there is just nothing it won't do well. 3 is more than 2.

Having been a SUB owner for a couple of years and seeming to remember the electros on the SUB active they are the same as the SR active. I am getting older could be a loss of memory but don't think so!
