Hi,

just want to know if it's worth going for a HS or HH pickup config. on a fretless Stingray? I plan to get one in near future. I currently play a cheap fretless jazz bass copy and must say that I like both pickups and all the different options available.
I really like the sound of the single H fretless Stingray, but it's also the only one I had a chance to hear.
Which one would you chose and why?

Thanks, Marko.

I'm a big proponent of piezos on fretless bass. So, if you are set on NOT getting a Bongo for your fretless, I'd go with a single H Stingray with the piezo bridge.

The piezos add a nice fullness and air to the tone.

I was considering the piezo option too. From what I've heard (mainly youtube videos) it does sound good.
I have yet to hear a fretless bongo with roudwounds. Maybe you guys can help me out with that :)

It's a musicman, probably in pu conf. would sound great, as a wise man said, it's all in the fingers.

Ain't nobody got piezos in their fingers ...

Well, much as I bleeb that "it's ALL in the fingers" is an
extreeeemely overstated slogan [based on good bassic
advice but stretched way too far ... ] I hear the distinct
voicing differences amongst my various MM FLs, all of
which are played with the same set of [my] fingers. OK,
mebbe it's ALL in the thumb ? I don't use that too much.

+1

Marko, ...if fretless, than single H with piezo, ...absolute fretless killer, The King of Choice, acoustic/magnetic/both tone options!!! ;)

I own 2 StingRays that are fretless: one is a single H and one is HH.

They do have slightly different tones and, for me, the single H is my go to instrument.

You'd have to hear them for yourself but the differences are subtle and you can't go wrong either way!

I have a H and if/when I get another one it would be a H with piezo!

I only know the Hp configuration.
The piezo really adds something very interesting to the tone, very useful.
Not what I was expecting before playing it but I really love it and I would miss it.

I was not able to find the words to explain but bassmonkeee did it very well "The piezos add a nice fullness and air to the tone".

Hope it helps,
Jef

OK, may I ask the same question for a fretless bongo. Hp, HHp or HSp? I read so much about single H bongos on here, so I am curious if the same goes for the fretless version...

Stingray (4 string) only offers piezo with single H right?

Stingray is only Hp. For the ago go, consider the HSp.... If you ever want the single coil neck pup sound, it can do it... Add some Piezo and you've got smooth depth plus mwah. :)
