Just bought a Bongo 5 - play mostly funk, rock, jazz. What do most people recommend for strings on a Bongo?

I play a Bongo 5 H or don't play. I can't tell you here what strings.

Stock.

EBMM Regular Slinkys. Green package.

(Note that the E-G strings on the 5-string Reg. Slinky set are the same as the Super Slinky 4 string set. Go figure. BP is an inscrutable guy.)

In the Relentless Search For Tone that most of us go through before we arrive here led me to purchase some hyper-expensive Austrian-made strings that sounded great on my former brand C bass.

But on my Bongo, nothing sounds better than plain old stock Slinkys. Way cheaper, too.

Group II Flats are on one of my Bongo four bangers.

More tension than Acme strings, more thud and old-time happiness.

One of these days, I'll try out the Group IIIs or IVs, which I understand are a bit lighter?

Anyone using those?

The kind the bass came with. Honestly! Green pack of slinkies, they are perfect!

I had a Bongo 5 and while I like regulars and supers, powers just seem to work on Bongos.

Wow, old thread. Stanky, I'm assuming you've tried Powers on your SR5s. What do you prefer, Regulars or Powers, and could you describe the difference?

I'm also kinda wondering why Powers for 5s are the same gauge as Regulars for 4s. Same with Regulars for 5s and Supers for 4s.

I actually have never tried powers on my SR5s. Currently, i'm thinking these EB regular slinkys are a bit heavy for my taste. Of course, the powers sound VERY big especially with that Bongo EQ.

It's thunder.

Thanks for the response. I just put a new set of Regulars on, but I have a set of Powers on order so I'm going to give them a try next.

+1 on the Regular slinkys, I am a string whore and I tried everything on my bongo 5 H/S and in the end the slinkys sounded better than anything else.
