So this is the second one I thought of AFTER the Vinnie Moore and Macalpine thing. Same thing goes here:
Who (out of these 2 players) do you like better and WHY??? Also which one of either of their albums (or what CD they were on) do you like best?

Steve Morse OR John Petrucci

Okay, I KNOW that they kind of really play different music, but you must remember that if there was no Morse there would be no Petrucci. Me personally these are the 2 guys that are ALL the way on the top of my favourite list, but Morse is definatly #1 for me. I think Steve is an absolutely AMAZING composer/arranger and overall incredible versetile guitarist. His technique I think arguably is the best. Petrucci is a very intricate guitarist with also AMAZING technique. What makes me like Morse better is his composition skills and the main thing is IMPROVISATION. I can not determine who I like better solely on their technique, because my brain would explode thinking about it. But I think Morse has the most amazing improvisation ability with the most incredible feeling and heart. This is purely demonstrated with Deep Purple on the live DVD Total Abandon in Australia. Petrucci DOES have very nice improvisations skills also, but I think for me it is a little more technical like a robot with feelings (lol). I liked his improv on the live G3 DVD in Tokyo on Glassgow Kiss, but you can kind of see when he played with Jordan Rudess live, that whenever he seems to get kinda stuck he starts throwing in lightning fast insanity (which I love by the way  ). Well this is once again MY personal opinion and preferance on this subject.
My favourite CDs by these two INCREDIBLE fellows are:

Steve Morse: High Tension Wires AND Full Circle

John Petrucci: Liquid Tension Experiment 1&2 AND Suspended Animation

Steve Morse. I like his sound and playing better, and he is sort of a "Musical father" of John Petrucci... so I like him better for making Petrucci the way he is today.... :D

That's not even a competition.
MORSE by leaps and bounds...
I've known JP for a long long time...
Even he would admit that he has absolutely nothing on Morse.or on many many many other guitarists.

Wow.. two great players!

Both have killer technique *and* good sense of melody.

I must admit though, I've been bored by recent offerings from each. Morse's "Major Impacts" albums just don't do it for me (I own both), and I don't really like more than a track or two from Petrucci's "Suspended Animation".
Not that the playing on the albums isn't mind-blowing.. it's just the writing that bores me. Call me crazy.

On the other hand, earlier stuff from both players is just amazing. I think "High Tension Wires" and "The Introduction" are some of my favorite Morse discs.

I love Petrucci on early Dream Theater discs. I don't own any Liquid Tension Experiment discs yet.

Go easy on the flames, folks, I'm just offering my honest opinion, which you are free to ignore, refute, or adopt. ;)

Not such a tough decision for me, but Steve how can you get bored of Morse??? I mean I can know that's your opinion, but I think Morse did AWESOME on the Major IMpacts albums. I am listening to it as I type actually. I like the first one better, but on both there is so much cool stuff. And you cant deny Air and A 6 String! Learn to play that whole thing flawlessly and your technique will improve tremendously (Speaking in general to everyone). This is basically the only piece that I learned the whole thing and played thousand times and still need to practice it.

Listen to the first 10 second of "Ghostwind" from the High Tension Wires album. It's absolutely inspired playing.

Then listen to anything else on the Major Impacts albums. I appreciate that Steve was trying to write in the style of other players. And he nailed them all. But I like him best when he's writing in the style of Steve Morse. :)

Ohhhh, well in that CASE I COMPLETELY AGREE with you man!!! His writing is the best ever (for me)! That's why he is my abolute favourite musician and composer. The Major Impacts just proves further how much of an incredible player he is being able to play ANYTHING. :D

I'll say Morse, but I'm also waaaayyy more familiar with steve's music. I own like 15 of Steve's recordings and only 3 of John's

MI 1&2 aren't at the top of my Morse listening either, SteveB ;)

I like when steve sounds most like Himself. a new dregs cd would be very exciting news.

I'd also add that I don't think I'll ever stop listening to John's duets cd with Jordan.

I agree with u roubster, sometime I kinda feel tha "vibe" from his improvs but in part I think is due to his technique and the way that phrases melody, u know progresive rock sometimes can appear to be that way, like complicated from a point of view and intrincated.

About your question I havent heard Morse that much, but what I have is awesome,so I can't give an objetive opinion on that matter , so I guess I'm gonna have to culturize myself:D

I love what John Petrucci does but Steve is my teacher.
I really feel like I owe him some more money.

Sure thing buddy, it's on his official website. It's an awesome piece that I will never get bored of playing, and you dont need any rhythm section or drums or anything. Perfect for guys that dont interact with any other musicians :p (well I hope that will change soon for me) :D !

I love both players, but Morse is by far the more versatile and complete musician. This is a tough comparison for JP, because very, very few players measure up to Morse. My favorite Morse record is The Introduction, and my favorite Petrucci record is Liquid Tension Experiment 2.
