Hanging, like so (sorry for the lack of EBMM content):

I got this method from Mandolin Bros. If they can hang $40,000 guitars like that, it must be alright for me. :)

I met a guy who had a very nice collection once. I was just there to pick up a purchase but he showed me about his stuff. Like an Ampeg Devil bass that was used for phots in some book and another that was shaped like the fin of a 57 Chevy and the tailight came on. His trick was to hang them but put a pillow case aboui the body for the most of the time. Kept the sun and dust out. Eventually too much to keep clean and they all went into cases in a closet (or 2 or 3)

Cases and in the closet. I don't need to give anyone a reason to come in while I'm not home. Which is what happened to a bassist on another forum.

I use the metal bodied "off the wall" hangers. they use 3 (not 2) screws to mount and seem much more secure than those little 2 screw things. I also use very long sheetrock screws and go right into the studs with them.
I like having all my basses up so I can grab one and plug it in if I want to record. my home studio is set up so that the computer is the only thing not always on. So by the time it boots I have the amp warmed up and ready to go.
I also like looking at my instruments!

I have heard from various musicians etc that its either bad to hang them, bad to put them on a stand bad to lean them frets first (or better) and bad to leave them in the case. All for reasons of truss rod and strings tension.

If you have a well made Bass it really doesn't mater if it's cased, wall mounted or on a stand it'll be fine, these are just tools and are made to be played, Just look at some of those old Fenders they've been thru Hell and still play, they may look funky.
Ernie Ball Makes an Instrument that can be put up against the best, So agian just play the thing it'll be fine.

listen to musicman nut for he has over 9000 basses.

really though hes right they're made to be played the worst thing you can do to it actually is taking the strings off and not using it. as for the leaning up against a wall on a stand hanging from wall problem, i heard that was a complete old wives tale from a custom guitar maker a long time ago.

but as for keeping my bass safe from vikings, which is the most dangerous threat against basses, i put it in a case, it cant fall over that way.

I put mine on a stand - I wouldn't trust my crummy apartment drywall to support a bass
