Ok kids lets have some thursday fun

Who is smarter Bass Players or Guitarists? Im leaning towards bassists as they are more secure and make fewer obscene faces. Guitarists are one notch below lead singers. Oh wait I play guitar too.......that should make me an expert

Go Go Dancer is by far the smartest person on the stage. Especially if you are a Go Go Dancer and reading this.

As a guitarist (who occasionally plays bass):

I'd say that bass players are smarter because they'll never be asked to figure out the guitarist's part.... ;)

as a guitar player, i tend to notice bassists are more serious in their approach in music generally. i think a lot of this is due to the fact that many guitarists just do it to look cool... usually when someone picks up a bass, they want to be musicians, or they have a deep curiousity. also, many of the bassists that i know are very smart, have a lot of common sense, and are deep thinkers

When we played in Germany, our bass player was by far the smartest.

He spoke fluent German, pulled all the women, told me to make a stew out of what I thought was a chunk of meat - turned out to be German Sausage that swelled up like a balloon in the saucepan - man did we all laugh about that - seeing the saucepan lid fluttering up and down like a high - hat cymbal!! ( Guitarists - those two metal things that drummers have difficulty playing properly !!)

He could hold a conversation in German with some of the most drunken Bar stool pigeons.( Think about it the other way around - you drunk Foreigner sober and he can understand everything - impressive!!)

He also taught me useless phrses in German whic when translated said something like
I Have a big ballpoint pen!
and
You are a big birthday cake!
Mike(the Bass player) if you read this, get in touch - they were fun times!!

I think he is still in Germany working for Fen*er. - Give me my guitar strap back man , you've only had it for 30 years !!!:D

Computer Geeks are smarter :D

Here's my scoop (doesn't apply to all - just a generalization):

- Singers - Egotistical pretty boys just looking for chicks
- Drummers - psycho's, prone to anxiety attacks a rage-a-holism
- Bassists - Deep thinkers, quiet, most important piece of the musical puzzle - they tie the rhythm to the melody.

- Guitarists (me) - Outgoing, control freaks, great arrangers, great band leaders

- Keyboard players (me too) - Intellectual, great multitaskers, one of the most expressive types of musicians - play more from the heart.

- wind guys - too cool, get the ladies, very emotional, yet even keeled and settled.
Your right guitarists are smarter because we have more strings :)

Are there any guitarists with an advanced degree on here? Surely guitarists are smarter because of the extra strings to contend with!

I've got a Masters in Engineering Physics. There are a bunch of PhD's kicking around here. Took some rocket science-type courses to round things out as well :D (Just so I could be cool like Norm.)

Who cares who's smarter? It's all about getting the chicks, right? :p

Hopefully I'll have my advanced degree this century. I'm starting the long road toward my PhD in physics and engineering.

Beej, I had an undergrad prof who had an engineering physics background. A lot of his research was in the nanotechnology field, more specifically sensors and nanomaterials. I never really talked to him about it (he didn't really like to talk to anyone).

What is it, exactly? I never really looked into it, but it sounded interesting. Actually sounds like what I'm going to be doing in a way.

The guitar player wins....... why? - bass notes are closer to the sound that can make humans soil themselves..... never a good look.

Guitar 1 - Bass 0

Do I win a prize BP? - A luke with Piezo would be amazing!?:D

I am a guitarist, and woukd normally say the Guitarist is smarter due to more complexity of what you have to do and memorize. HOWEVER, it really depends what kind of guitar player and bassist you are talking about. For example Dave LaRue is probably smarter and more musical than MAJORITY of guitar wankers today and even before. Take Steve Morse, and he's a freakin genious, composing, arranging and technically blowing away anything else. BUT Steve Morse and Dave LaRue together makes a PERFECT match, kind of like Yin and Yang. If none of this makes sense than just omitt it, cuz either you're a bassist, or a guitar wanker who SHOULD be a bassist :p :p :p :p :D .

Well, it's really what you say- Engineering and Physics. We took a lot of the Eng stuff from other disciplines plus the pure math and phys stuff. Engineering is applied science ... Eng Phys is closer to pure science.

Pretty much all of my classmates went on to grad degrees too. I did fiber optics/lasers/telecom for a while but then, tragically, got seduced by the Internet and it's start up opportunities.
