Why do my strings sound dull?

Hi,
I usually buy Ernie Ball coated titanium strings, they're my favorite by far for
not just tone, but feel.
After the Christmas rush, the local music store was out of coated strings so I bought the nickel coated, 10 - 52's...skinny top heavy bottom, matching the gauge of strings I normally buy.

When I restrung and tuned up, the G and B strings (the G string especially) sounded dull; no ringing tone, no sustain.
The guitar has a bill 'n becky X500XL in the bridge with a treble bleed mod.
Taming the treble is the usual problem.
What could be happening here?

BuMil, can't be the strings that are dull!! What does that leave us? you and the guitar - take your pick.

Nickel's are warmer (but never dull). Maybe just a bad night.

I thought I was going crazy when I put a set if the titanium slinky 10 gauge on my SG. They are not a very bright string. The feel is second to none don't get me wrong. I guess with a cranked amp you can't really tell.

Have you tried cleaning them?
I always wipe new strings with a rag after install, you'd be surprised the gunk on a new set...
Pinch in between a cleaning rag, then go up and down the string a few times and you'll see a line on the rag...
Just a thought....

It is possible to get dead strings out of the pack. I'd say just try a different set of strings and see if that solves the problem. If it doesn't then maybe it's the guitar.

I've definitely gotten dull strings right out of the pack. it sucks, but it can happen.
