I would think because of the uneven pressure at the narrower ends would not stand up to well in a high power situation. This could be overcome with design and proper materials I know, but it seems manufactures didn't stay that course. Car audio speakers were made that shape mostly to suit placement not really achieve a particular sound.
On the other side of things, there are now several car audio manufactures that make a square subs.
I think the cone shaped speaker will be with us for a quite a while.

I see where you are coming from INMT and thanks for posting.

Anybody else want to chime in?

Heres a picture of an old Selmer Amp with an elliptical speaker and I'm sure that there were many more made in the "good ol' daze"
Why would they have gone with an elliptical speaker in this case?
